Racers Produce Late Game Drama – But Drop 2-Point Defeat to Utah Valley

The Murray State Racers met the Utah Valley Wolverines for the first time Friday night at the CFSB Center
The Murray State Racers produced some late-game heroics in their Friday night tilt against the Utah Valley Wolverines, but it wasn't enough in a 77-75 defeat, the Racers' first loss this season at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.
The Racers (3-2) hit the road for a Thanksgiving Week neutral site game Tuesday against UT Arlington in Jacksonville, Florida. The 4 p.m. Central Time tip happens at the Florida State College Arena.
The Racers put four in double-figure scoring with 19 points from Terence Harcum, while Nick Ellington scored 17 points, JaCobi Wood 15 and AJ Ferguson 13.
Featuring a game that was tied 13 times (all in the second half) the Racers tied it on a dramatic four-point play from Kylen Milton with 28 seconds remaining. His 3-point basket and subsequent free throw knotted the game at 75-75.
With the game maybe heading into overtime, the Wolverine's scored the winning basket with .8 remaining on a tip in by Tanner Toolson. The Racers got off a shot by KyeRon Lindsay that stayed missed at the buzzer.
Arriving at the halftime break trailing 35-30, the Racers had to claw to overcome an 11-point deficit with 6:11 on the clock. The Racers managed to outscore the Wolverines 12-6 with pair of threes from Harcum, one from Wood and two trips to the line for Ferguson that yielded three free throws.

- MSU had a poor shooting first half in hitting 32 percent (7-of-22) and were 2-of-13 on two-point shots for 15 percent.
- There were 13 ties in the game, all in the second half.
- Racers lost the points battle 46 to 30.
- MSU went 2-of-10 in the first half on layups, but then hit 11-of-13 in the second half.
- Harcum's 16 first half points matched the season-best for the Racers, after KyeRon Lindsay scored 16 points in the first half in the Middle Tennessee game (Nov. 16).
- The Racers and UTA have met only one time before, in 1968 when the Racers were led by MSU Hall of Fame Coach Cal Luther.
- It was the season opener for the 1968-69 season, the Racers beat UTA at Racer Arena 91-83 on 11-30-68.
- MSU's Ron Johnson led the way for the Racers with a double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds.
- MSU Hall of Famer, Claude Virden, scored 29 points on 12-of-18 from the field.
