Murray State extends its winning streak at home to 10 games.
The Racers secured the series with a walk-off win over Little Rock, 5-4, at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.
After a scoreless four innings to start the game, the Trojans took the lead in the fifth on an RBI groundout before Murray State answered back on an RBI single from Taylor Howell. In the sixth, Little Rock retook the lead with two runs coming from a sacrifice fly and a throwing error.
Down 3-1 in the seventh, Dan Tauken launched his fourth home run of the year with a two-run shot to tie the game. With his homer, the Racers extended their streak to 12 games with a home run.
The Trojans continued their fight in the eighth, taking a 4-3 lead with a leadoff solo homer. Down to their last chance to rally, Murray State started off the ninth with an infield single by Riley Hawthorne to bring the winning run to the plate.
On the first pitch he saw, Howell blasted a no-doubter over the left field fence for his sixth home run of the season to win the game and the series for the Racers.
Jacob Pennington earned the win out of the bullpen, moving him to 3-0 on the season. The graduate went five innings in relief allowing just one earned run on five hits and four strikeouts. Bryce Valero was effective in his start, going four innings allowing one run on two hits and four walks while striking out four of his own.
Dustin Mercer recorded his eighth multi-hit game this year, the second-most on the team behind Drew Vogel's 10. Hawthorne picked up his sixth multi-hit game and Howell his fourth. With his base hit in the bottom of the first, Jonathan Hogart extended his reached-base streak to a team-leading 19 games. Carson Garner extended his reached-base streak to 10 games with a walk in the third inning, the second-highest for the Racers.
Murray State now looks for a series sweep over the Trojans in the series finale on Sunday, March 17 at 1 p.m. CT at Reagan Field.
