Racers Bring Friday Night Fireworks In Run Rule Over Lindenwood

Murray State scored 14 of its 16 runs through the first three innings of the game.

The Racers handled the Lindenwood Lions with ease, winning 16-4 in seven innings. Eight Racers combined for 17 hits in the Friday night route.

Lindenwood opened up the game with a two-RBI base hit up the middle with the bases loaded. Murray State answered back immediately with a bases-loaded two-RBI base hit of their own from Carson Garner. The Racers took the lead after Jonathan Hogart scored on a double play with the bases loaded.

The Lions tied the game up in the top of the second on a perfectly executed double steal with runners on first and third. Yet, the Racers kept the bats going on an RBI single from Drew Vogel followed by a three-run bomb from Hogart for his second in the last three games, making it a 7-3 ball game.

Murray State exploded in the third inning with a seven-run frame that started off with back-to-back homers from Taylor Howell and Dan Tauken. Vogel, Dustin Mercer and Hogart followed that with RBI doubles from each player. Tauken capped off the inning with his second RBI in his second at-bat of the inning on a base hit, making it 14-3.

The Racers were held scoreless in the fourth, but Taylor Howell blasted his second home run of the game on a two-run shot to give him four on the year.

The Lions got a run back in the seventh inning on an RBI base hit, but Murray State closed the door on a strikeout looking.

Cade Vernon picked up his second win after tossing five innings allowing two earned runs on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Malik Pogue was efficient at keeping Lindenwood at bay to maintain the run-rule victory, going two innings in relief allowing one run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Vogel and Mercer each had three-hit days with two RBIs and combined for five runs scored. Hogart led the team in RBIs with four, going 2-for-3 and scoring three runs.

The Racers return to action on Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m. for Game 2 against the Lions at Reagan Field.
