Jacob Pennington is now second all-time in program history in career strikeouts.
Murray State dropped the second game of the three-game weekend series to UIC, 9-3, on Saturday at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago, Illinois.
The Flames struck first in the opening inning with a solo homer, but the Racers answered back quickly in the second with an RBI single by Riley Hawthorne to score Jonathan Hogart. The back-and-forth continued when UIC retook the lead with an RBI double in the third before Dan Tauken tied it at 2-2 with his 10th home run of the season in the fourth inning.
A three-run home run gave UIC the lead again in the fifth. Hogart then cut the deficit to two runs with a solo homer in the sixth for his sixth of the year and his second-straight game with a home run.
A pair of solo home runs and a pair of sacrifice flies across the final four frames for UIC sealed the win for the Flames on their home field.
Graduate pitcher Jacob Pennington recorded his 233rd career strikeout with his third strikeout of the third inning, moving him into second for all-time career strikeouts in Racers baseball program history. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native ended the day with nine strikeouts through six innings on the mound.
Hogart, Tauken and Riley Hawthorne recorded multi-hit games, and Hogart scored two of Murray State's three runs on Saturday.
The Racers look ahead to the rubber match with UIC at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, April 21 at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago.
