Yantko’s leadership and vision continues to power Racer Athletics to unprecedented success
Having continued to lead Murray State Athletics to unprecedented growth and success in less than two years, Director of Athletics Nico Yantko has received a contract extension that will see him lead the Racers through 2028.
Yantko, who was named the department's 10th Director of Athletics on Sept. 1, 2022, has elevated the Racers' brand at a national level with his forward-thinking approaches to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), his focus on community engagement, and his unrivaled fundraising success.
"We have experienced a tremendous amount of success over the last two years, and we know that we will continue to elevate the brand and profile of Murray State Athletics on a state and national level thanks to the belief and unwavering support of so many," Director of Athletics Nico Yantko said. "I want to thank Dr. Bob Jackson and our Board of Regents for believing in the strong vision that we have set for our University and for allowing me the opportunity to continue and serve our student-athletes, coaches, and staff as the Director of Athletics at Murray State. Marnie, Chaney, Gino and I are thrilled to remain in Murray and we are excited for what is to come in the future."
Since his arrival, Murray State has completely revamped its fundraising approach and raised over $15 million in new gifts for campaign initiatives. Yantko's plan has seen the department record the largest-ever single investment to MSU Athletics in department history, a $1.5 million commitment from Swift & Staley, which is one of six seven-figure commitments Yantko has secured since the start of 2024, a record at Murray State.
Backed by the success in fundraising the Racers were able to complete several million dollars' worth of capital projects that have overhauled the athletics footprint, including the Men's Basketball Locker Room, the Football Locker Room, the Draffen Family Performance Center & Weight Room, and the Baseball/Softball Performance Center, among others.
His fundraising acumen and forward-thinking approach to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) saw him spearhead the department endorsing the Blue & Gold Standard, the official NIL entity of Murray State Athletics. Behind his proactive and transparent approach to NIL, Murray State has continued to position itself as one of the most innovative departments in the NIL landscape nationally.
"I am very pleased with Nico's leadership and his passionate commitment to the growth, success and current momentum of Racer Athletics in numerous areas," Murray State President Dr. Bob Jackson said. "Nico has a strong connectivity with our student-athletes, coaches, fans, alumni and supporters while helping ensure Murray State University's dedication to academic and athletic excellence."
With a continued emphasis on the student-athlete experience and an influx of new resources, Yantko has overseen the continued success of the Dennis Jackson Leadership Program, which provides Murray State's student-athletes resources in the areas of career readiness, leadership & civic engagement, NIL preparedness & brand management, financial literacy and mental health.
Over the last year, the program has propelled the Racers to a record-setting year in NIL preparedness, community service and engagement and academics.
In the classroom, MSU's student-athletes achieved a departmental 3.0 cumulative GPA for the 40th-straight semester after posting a 3.346 in Spring 2024, the highest GPA in department history. Since Yantko's arrival, the department has boasted record-setting GPAs with a then-record 3.27 in Spring 2023 and a 3.26 in Fall 2023.
In January of 2024, Yantko continued to elevate Murray State in the national spotlight with the hiring of Jody Wright as the Racers' 20th football coach in program history on January 10, 2024. Wright, who is regarded as one of the nation's top recruiters and boasts one of the most impressive resumes in college football, was publicly endorsed by Nick Saban, Shane Beamer, Billy Napier, among others, and assembled one of the top staffs in all of FCS football.
