Freshman Breece Bass scored her first two collegiate goals in Murray State’s first win of the 2024 season.
The Murray State women's soccer team were victorious over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks on Sunday, taking the match by a score of 2-1 at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
The Racers took advantage early on in the match, with Breece Bass driving herself into the opposing box and delivering a shot to the right side of the net to put Murray State on top in just the sixth minute.
After a defensive battle between the Redhawks and the Racers, SEMO broke through and scored the equalizer in the 85th minute. Just seven seconds after the match restarted, Bass returned with her aggression and drove herself into the box to deliver her second collegiate goal and first game-winner in a Racer uniform.
Murray State outshot SEMO 9-6 through 90 minutes, with six Racers shots to the Redhawks one shot in the first half. Five Racers saw the full 90 minutes of play on the pitch.
The Racers turn their attention to hosting their regular season home opener against Xavier on Thursday, August 22 at 4 p.m. CT at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.

Head Coach Matt Lodge on his team's performance:
"[I thought we were] scrappy. I think it was one we dominated from start to finish, I know they had one shot on target and it was a phenomenal shot late in the game there. Winning is not easy. I told the girls that—winning is not easy. If it was, everyone would do it. At least we found a way to get it done today, and I'm hoping they finally got a taste for it, and can we kick on. Obviously, we face a really tough team on Thursday, but we'll enjoy this one. I've learned to enjoy every single victory. However it comes you've got to enjoy it because, again, if winning was easy then everyone would do it. I'm really proud of them. I told them to win the game in the second half, and we did that."

Head Coach Matt Lodge on Breece Bass:
"She's a game changer. Chattanooga, she looked dangerous there in preseason and she looked dangerous at Cincinnati when she won us the penalty. Now, she's got a taste for scoring. Honestly, I'm just really happy she's on our team. I think it was a change of gear when we conceded—and I don't know how far it was after—but she just picked it up and nothing was getting in her way. She scored one with her right [foot], one with her left [foot]—anyway you want to do it and she'll do it. We played six subs today and I think everyone contributed really well. We got some good minutes from some of our depth."
