The Racers have their focus set on their regular season home opener when they host the 19th-nationally ranked Xavier Musketeers at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky on Thursday, August 22 at 4 p.m. CT.
With Xavier entering the match as a nationally ranked opponent, it marks the first time in program history a ranked team will take the field with the Racers at Cutchin Field and the ninth time Murray State has faced a ranked opponent in program history.
"We are excited to welcome a ranked team to Murray for the first time in program history," head coach Matt Lodge said. "Xavier are the reigning Big East champs, and we have a great opportunity to compete against them on home soil. It is going to be a fast-paced game and we are ready for the challenge."
The Musketeers are off to a 2-0 start to the season and are coming off a 3-0 win over Michigan at home which helped boost them into the top 25. Through the first two matches, Olivia Lawson leads Xavier with three goals and six total points in 112 total minutes. Samantha Wiehe and Elin Hansson each have dished two assists and have clocked at least 120 total minutes this season.
Maria Galley is the only player for Xavier to not have been subbed off the pitch through the first two matches.
The last time Murray State faced a ranked team was in 2021 when Xavier was ranked 15th and defeated the Racers in Cincinnati. MSU has faced eight ranked opponents since 2003, three since Lodge took over as the head coach in 2018, and have been winless in all eight matchups.
Thursday's match is the third all-time meeting between Xavier and Murray State and the second matchup taking place at Cutchin Field. The Racers are 0-2 against the Musketeers in their first two meetings with a 3-4 double-overtime loss at home in 2019 and a 1-2 loss at Xavier's home pitch.
Breece Bass, who was named the Missouri Valley Conference's Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, is tied for the second-most goals in the conference with two on just four shots and carries a .750 shots-on-goal percentage through her first two career collegiate matches.
Murray State's entire back line in Morgan Bodker, Hannah Carter, Kate Stordy and Reagan Tate have yet to be subbed off the pitch this season.
