The Murray State Cross Country Squads competed Friday evening at the Osage Center in Cape Girardeau

The Murray State Women's Cross Country team came home with a third place showing at the 2024 season opener at the Redhawk Invitational, hosted by Southeast Missouri State at the Osage Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The Racers placed third behind fellow Missouri Valley Conference teams, Missouri State and Southern Illinois.

A pair of MSU freshman, performing in their first event as Racers showed well as Liz Smith placed third in the 5K race with a time of 18:41, while Autumn Egleston carded a time of 19:05 for a 12^th place finish. Jocelyn Host's 14^th place finish (19:07) and the 18^th place finish by Breanna Day (19:13) gave the Racers four runners in the top-20.

"What's really exciting about this team is the depth that we have," said head coach Jordan Johnston. "I think these women all want to run for each other and work together throughout a race. Breanna Day had one of the best performances of the day in my opinion. It has taken four years to convince her to put herself out there early in the race and it was great to see her take that chance on herself. Seeing freshmen Liz Smith and Autumn Egleston out in front from the gun makes me feel really good about the future of our program. I'm looking forward to seeing how the ladies do in the 6k in two weeks at UT Martin."

The Racers are back in action (Sept. 14) at the UTM Invitational staged at Graham Park in Union City, Tenn.
