Murray State Volleyball (6-4, 1-0 MVC) defeated the Redbirds of Illinois State (5-9, 0-1 MVC) 3-1 in the MVC opener for both squads.
Four different Racers tallied double-digit kills as Ella Vogel led the way with 17 and put up 14 digs as well. Lily Burnett totaled a career-high 14, Federica Nuccio had 13, and Haidi Miliou put up 11. Bailey DeMier had 46 assists, Morgan McClure had six block assists, and Daliah Miller led the team in digs with 15.
The Navy & Gold rallied from down 19-14 in the first set to take the win 25-22, then won the second by the same score. Illinois State refused to go quietly, winning a hard-fought third set 25-19 before the Racers held on to win the final set 25-21.
"We just ket chiseling away," said head coach David Schwepker about his team's first set comeback. "That really helped boat everyone's confidence to come back and get that win…it was not easy. Illinois State was really good but the girls said they were gonna give Kendra her birthday present, which was a win," he said referring to his wife who also travels with the team.
The Racers are back in action on Saturday, September 28th at 3 p.m. CT in Peoria, Illinois against the Bradley Braves.
