Mr. Clutch - Harcum Sends Racers To Sweep of Iowa Trip
1/8/2025 4:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MSU became just the fifth team since 2017-18 to win both games in Iowa over Drake and UNI
The Murray State Racers made it 2-of-2 on road wins in the Hawkeye State Wednesday with a thrilling 71-68 victory over the Northern Iowa Panthers at Mcleod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa Wednesday.
The Racers (9-7) improved to 3-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference as they come home to the CFSB Center Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip off against the Valparaiso Beacons in Murray, Kentucky.
After building as much as an 11-point lead with 7:25 remaining, it took a tough jumper in the lane with 12 seconds left and a pair of Terence Harcum free throws with three seconds left to push the Racers to a sweep of their Iowa trip after Sunday's win in Des Moines at Drake. Since 2017-18, only four teams in the MVC have won at Drake and UNI in the same season and now the Racers have done it a span of four days.
MSU's gutsy effort was led by Harcum's 14 points as the Racers put four in double-figures, including Alden Applewhite off the bench for 11 points. JaCobi Wood also added 11 points and MSU got 10 from AJ Ferguson.
The Racers managed a 33-37 lead at the halftime intermission on the strength of shooting 48 percent with an impressive six 3-point baskets.
Applewhite changed the game for the Racers when he entered with the Racers in front by two points with 13:21 remaining. He fueled a 13-3 MSU run by hitting three-straight 3-pointers and he made it four shots in a row when he finished a fast break for MSU to get their largest lead of the day at 11 points with 7:25 left at 60-49.
UNI took the lead with 36 seconds left when the Racers turned the ball over and Trey Campbell made a three-point play to make it 68-67 with the Panthers in front, but Harcum sent the Racers to the win with his clutch play.
