The Murray State Racers opened their 2025-26 season by hosting the West Virginia Mountaineers and UT Martin Skyhawks on Sunday at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Ky.
The Racers finished second out of the three competitors, firing a 2335 in smallbore and 2371 in air rifle for an aggregate of 4706. The Mountaineers came out on top with scores of 2360 in smallbore and 2384 in air rifle for a 4744 aggregate, while UT Martin was in third with a 2286 in smallbore, 2330 in air rifle, and an aggregate of 4616.
Sophomore Carlotta Salafia was the top scorer for the Navy & Gold, firing a 586 in smallbore and tying her career high with a match-high 599 in air rifle with 59 centers for an 1185 aggregate.
"My mental preparation has gotten better," said the Italian native. "I know what to expect from the competition here now, and the preparation I get from coach (Lollar) and my experience competing internationally this summer has also helped a lot."
Freshman Lea Soulé was the second-highest performer for the Racers, finishing seventh overall with an aggregate of 1177. The Osceola, Texas native placed third in smallbore with a 590 and fired a 587 in smallbore.
"I had an empty head going in here," said the Texan. "I wasn't really expecting much, just my best."
Junior Caroline Martin and senior Grace Foley both cracked the top ten in air rifle, both firing a 591, with the junior tallying 43 centers.
Foley and Martin were 12th and 13th in smallbore with scores of 581; this time, the senior got the edge with 25 centers.
