Sharnecce Currie-Jelks Picks Up Player and Newcomer of the Week Honors
Murray State forward Sharnecce Currie-Jelks has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player and Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Currie-Jelks earned the dual honors after a dominant showing at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., where she averaged 27.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game to lead the Racers to a pair of victories.
In Friday's 88-83 win over George Mason, Currie-Jelks posted a massive double-double with 32 points and 11 rebounds. She was highly efficient from the floor, shooting 9-of-14, and punished the Patriots at the free-throw line, sinking 14-of-16 attempts.
The junior followed that performance with another double-double on Saturday against Boston College. In the Racers' 82-77 victory, she tallied 23 points and grabbed 10 boards while shooting 8-of-13 from the field.
Over the two-game stretch, Currie-Jelks shot 63 percent from the floor (17-of-27) and 87.5 percent from the charity stripe (21-of-24).Â
The pair of wins improved Murray State's record to 5-2 on the season.
