Murray State Returns Tuesday at Belmont
The Murray State Racers (9-14, MVC 1-3) fell 4-3 to the Bradley Braves (11-15, 2-1 MVC) in the rubber match on Sunday in Murray, Ky.
Despite the cold weather, the Racer bats warmed up early as Katy Huels hit a stand-up triple in the team's first at-bat of the game. Parker Holcombe got the RBI on the next at-bat, sending Huels home with an infield single. Â
Trailing by a run, Bradley finally got going in the third inning. Ella Shafer scored a pair of runs on a double to deep center field to put the Braves in front 2-1. They increased their lead to 4-1 in the sixth with another two-RBI double, this time from Abbott Badgley.  Â
Courtney Sandy responded in the bottom of the inning after coming in as a pinch runner for Ava Ozment, following her single. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Sandy raced all the way home from second base on a sacrifice from Erin Lackey. Â
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the second, the Racers looked to be in business following a Rylee Webb lead-off double. Taylor Franzen cut the deficit to just one with another double, scoring Webb. The Racers got the winning run on base with no outs after a single from Huels, however during the next at-bat Franzen was called out after review for leaving second base early on a wild pitch. The Braves got the final two outs on a Parker Holcombe strikeout and a flyout from Kenly Minor, escaping with the 4-3 win.Â
Sydney Kennedy (6-8) got the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings and striking out seven while allowing three earned runs. Bre Haislip (4-7) took the loss after allowing four earned runs in five innings. Â
Katy Huels led the team with a pair of hits while Parker Holcombe, Ava Ozment, Rylee Webb, and Taylor Franzen had one each. Holcombe, Franzen, and Erin Lackey each had one RBI. Â
Abbott Badgley led the Braves with two hits and a pair of RBI and Ella Schafer also had two RBI.
The Racers are back for midweek action against Belmont in Nashville, Tenn. at 3:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, March 18.Â
