Nic Schutte tossed his best game as a Racer against the Bradley Braves in a 5-0 win
Murray State Baseball got a season-best performance from Nic Schutte of eight shutout innings to lead the Racers to a series-opening 5-0 victory over the Bradley Braves at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
The Racers (17-8) improved to 3-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference with a Monday noon doubleheader planned, after the series was moved to the neutral site after heavy rain over the weekend took away MSU's Johnny Reagan Field as an option.
Out of Louisville, Schutte tossed eight innings of shutout baseball with a career-high 10 strikeouts with only two hits and three walks given. His pitching gem marks the first time a MSU hurler had 10 strikeouts in a game since Jacob Pennington fanned 10 in 2022 against Eastern Illinois. The shutout marks the second for the Racers this spring after their first, also at Capaha Park, opening weekend over Western Illinois in February.
The Racers were efficient in using their six hits on the day and eight walks from Braves to plate five runs, all coming in the first three innings.
Jonathan Hogart took over the team lead with his eighth home run by leading off the game for the Racers, while Carson Garner walked three times and scored twice to increase his MVC-leading total to 32.
