Normal, Ill. – Murray State women's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to five games but settled for a 1-1 draw at Illinois State in Thursday's Missouri Valley Conference opener.
Breece Bass gave Murray State (5-3-2) the lead in the 30th minute, scoring her third goal of the season off an assist from Megan Wilson. The goal gave Bass the team lead in scoring.
The Redbirds (3-4-4) evened the match with four seconds left in the first half on a Murray State own goal.
Head coach Matt Lodge praised the Racers' second-half response, calling it 'very good,' though he admitted the game was cagey and tense. Despite controlling possession and outshooting the Redbirds 12-5, the Racers couldn't break through after conceding the first-half own goal.
In her first game since Aug. 31 against Marshall, Griselda Revolorio recorded three saves, surpassing 150 career saves in goal.
Alongside strong defensive play, it marked the Racers' fifth straight game outshooting their opponent. MSU also extended its unbeaten streak to five, the program's longest since March 2-16, 2020.
"It turned into a bit of an uglier game than I wanted," Lodge said. "But I thought we rose to the challenge…. A point on the road is going to be good for us as we get through MVC play."
The Racers will look to build on their five-game unbeaten run when they return home to face Northern Iowa on Sept. 25 at 3 p.m
