Racers Set to Host Velvet Milkman Classic

Murray State softball (4-6) is set to host the Velvet Milkman Classic this weekend in Murray, Kentucky.
The Racers open the weekend on Thursday against Green Bay before facing South Dakota State and North Dakota on Friday, North Dakota again on Sunday, and IU Indy twice on Sunday.
The Navy and Gold are coming off a hard-fought home opener against the Kentucky Wildcats that saw Murray State fall 4-2 in front of a record crowd of 657. Katy Huels went 2-for-4 at the plate on the day and scored a run. Kynadee Warner, Allie Waldron, Kenley Minor, and Reagan Towns all recorded base hits. Waldron and Minor recorded RBI, while Towns recorded the first hit of her career. Bre Haislip (1-0) started in the circle, pitching four innings and allowing just one earned run and five hits. Raylee Roby (1-1) pitched 1 1/3 and allowed two earned runs, taking the loss. Karlye Graber pitched 1 2/3, allowing one earned run and notching a pair of strikeouts.
Bailey Broemmer leads the Racers with a .364 batting average and is tied with Katy Huels and Kynadee Warner for the second-most hits on the team with eight. Kenley Minor leads the team with nine while batting .321. Freshman Allie Waldron leads the team with a pair of home runs and five RBI while hitting .259.
Emily Siurek (0-1) features a team-low ERA of 3.00 across a team-high 16 1/3 innings. She is tied with Karlye Graber (1-1) to lead the team with 11 strikeouts. Graber has an ERA of 5.38 across 13 innings. Bre Haislip (1-0) has pitched 15 innings, allowed 10 earned runs, and struck out seven. Raylee Roby (1-1) has pitched 10 innings across five appearances with an ERA of 5.42, and Hailey Brereton (1-3) has an ERA of 8.59 across four starts and 7 1/3 innings pitched.
Scouting the Phoenix
Green Bay currently sits at 0-6 on the season after being unable to pick up a win at the DePaul Dome Tournament. They are coming off a 2025 season where they finished 19-32 overall with a 10-14 mark in the Horizon League and finished No. 4 in the Horizon League Championship. Head coach Sara Kubuske is in her seventh season at the helm of the Phoenix and features a 102-168 overall record as a head coach. Thursday will mark the first-ever game between the Racers and the Phoenix.
Scouting the Jackrabbits
South Dakota State is off to a hot start in 2026, coming into the Velvet Milkman Classic with a record of 9-3 and a two-game winning streak. In 2025, the Jackrabbits finished 29-26 with a 13-5 mark in the Summit League. The Jackrabbits were eliminated by South Dakota in an extra-inning semifinal thriller. South Dakota State is led by head coach Kristina McSweeny. In her four years with the Jackrabbits, she has amassed a record of 101-67 after 10 years at Arkansas Tech, where she finished with a record of 356-184. Murray State has a 3-0 all-time record against the Jackrabbits with the most recent win coming in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday, Feb. 7, 2020.
Scouting the Fighting Hawks
North Dakota comes to Murray with a 3-7 record thus far in 2026 and on a four-game losing streak. In 2025, the Fighting Hawks finished with a 26-30 record and a 7-11 mark in the Summit League. They fell to the South Dakota Coyotes in Brookings to end their season. Head coach Jordan Stevens is in his 12th season as the skipper of the Fighting Hawks, with a 193-379 record. Before his time at North Dakota, Stevens spent four seasons at Valparaiso, where he posted a record of 134-120-1. The Racers and Fighting Hawks have faced off twice, with each team winning once. The Racers won 9-1 in a 2021 matchup, and the Fighting Hawks won 4-2 in 2022.
Scouting the Jaguars
IU Indy is 3-6 on the season after losing four straight at the Cardinal Clash in Troy, Alabama. The Jaguars finished 22-27 in 2025 with a 15-9 record in the Horizon League and were eliminated by Green Bay in the Horizon League Tournament. Elisabeth Beirne has been the head coach of the Jaguars since 2017, amassing a 119-256 record across nine seasons. Murray State is 3-0 all-time against the Jaguars, with the Racers most recently picking up a pair of wins in 2024 in Murray, Kentucky.
