PADUCAH, Ky. - Murray State baseball dominated Kentucky State 26-2 on Tuesday, powered by a career-best performance from Luke Mistone. The Racers set several team season highs in the victory, including runs scored (26), hits (20), and RBIs (24).
"We talked about just having a good process; it doesn't matter who we play," Head Coach Dan Skirka said. "I really thought our pregame, they were as locked in as if we were playing the Yankees today. So, I was proud of them for that."
Mistone was the catalyst for the offensive outburst, finishing 5-for-6 at the plate. The performance established new career highs for the junior in hits (5), RBIs (9), and runs scored (4). With his nine RBIs on the night, Mistone brought his season total to 25, which leads the Missouri Valley Conference by seven over teammate Daylan Pena.
"You need guys to step up, and he's just such a professional hitter with a great approach and mindset and really just sets the tone for our offense," Skirka said of Mistone.
Five different Racers recorded multiple hits in the lopsided affair. Pena finished the night with three hits and 18 RBIs on the season, while Easton Romero, Kingsley Guthrie, and Jake Slade each notched two hits to help secure the win.
How it Happened
The Racer offense clicked from the opening pitch, finding gaps and capitalizing on Kentucky State miscues to post a season-high 26 runs. The 20-hit barrage was spread across the lineup, but it was Mistone who provided the heaviest lifting with a pair of run-scoring knocks that broke the game open early.
While the bats took center stage, the Murray State pitching staff remained efficient, limiting the Thorobreds to just two runs over nine innings. The victory marks a significant momentum builder as the team continues its conference slate.
The Racers will look to carry this offensive rhythm into their next matchup, sitting atop several MVC individual and team statistical categories following the record-breaking performance in Paducah.
