The Murray State Racers (9-12, 1-1 MVC) are set to host the Valparaiso Beacons (9-12, 0-2 MVC) for a Missouri Valley Conference weekend series at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky.
Following the opening weekend of MVC play, the Racers are sixth in the conference, while Valparaiso is in last place after suffering a pair of losses to Southern Illinois.
The Racers hosted UNI on MVC opening weekend, splitting a Friday doubleheader before Saturday's rubber match was canceled due to weather. Murray State came out on top in the opening game, winning 10-9 in eight innings. Karlye Graber (3-3) got the win in relief after allowing two earned runs and striking out three in 4 1/3 innings of work, and Bailey Broemmer delivered the game-winning RBI with a single to right field that scored Allie Waldron, who reached on a triple. The Racers dropped the second game after UNI got in front in the early innings, taking a 5-0 lead in the second. Murray State looked to respond in the middle innings but ultimately fell 11-4.
The Racers have been among the most dangerous baserunning teams in the MVC this season and are second in the conference with 38 stolen bases. Katy Huels and Kynadee Warner are fourth and fifth in the conference with nine and eight steals each. Bailey Broemmer has been one of the leaders at the plate for the Racers all season, leading the team with a .358 batting average and 11 RBI. She also sits second on the team with 19 base hits. The senior center fielder also boasts a deep highlight tape that features several acrobatic catches and a pair of home runs. Her fellow outfielder, Kynadee Warner, leads the team with 24 base hits and features a .353 batting average. Freshman catcher Allie Waldron features a .309 batting average, 10 RBI, 17 hits, and leads the team with 13 walks.
Bre Haislip (3-3) leads the Racers with 48 2/3 innings pitched and features a 3.31 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Emily Siurek (0-2) leads the team with a 3.20 ERA across 19 2/3 innings, and Karlye Graber (3-3) is third with a 4.55 ERA across 40 innings and leads the team with 33 strikeouts on the year. Raylee Roby (2-1) has a 4.71 ERA through 19 1/3 innings, and Hailey Brereton (1-3) has a 12.00 ERA through 9 1/3.
Scouting the Beacons
Murray State is 5-0 all-time against Valparaiso, most recently getting a pair of road wins in 2024. Valparaiso enters the weekend with a 9-12 record, sitting at the bottom of the MVC standings. It is 0-2 in MVC play following an opening weekend that saw it lose 12-0 and 4-0 in a Friday doubleheader at Southern Illinois. The Beacons feature the third-best batting average in the MVC at .293 and lead the conference in hits with 160. They are also dangerous on the basepaths, as sophomore Madison Vrastil is second in the conference with 15 stolen bases. The Beacons' pitching staff is seventh in the MVC with a 5.13 ERA. Sydney McDermott (7-4) features a team-low 4.12 ERA, is third in the league with 57 strikeouts, and her seven wins are third in the MVC. Azayla Lopez (1-3) has a 5.59 ERA and 31 strikeouts through 36 1/3 innings, and Caitlyn Quickle has a 5.62 ERA and 17 strikeouts through 28 2/3.
