Murray State and Valparaiso Return Saturday for Rubber Match
The Murray State Racers (10-13, 2-2 MVC) and Valparaiso Beacons (10-13, 1-3 MVC) split a doubleheader on a sunny Friday afternoon at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky.
Game 1: Beacons 3, Racers 2
Valparaiso came out on top in the low-scoring opener. Neither team got on the board until the third inning when Valparaiso scored on a sacrifice fly.
Murray State responded in the following inning as Bailey Broemmer tied it up with her third home run of the season. The Beacons added two more in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Adison Hicks added her third homer of the season in the seventh, making it a one-run game. Despite having the tying run at second, the Racers were unable to capitalize in the final inning, falling 3-2.
Azalya Lopez was the winning pitcher for Valparaiso, while Karlye Graber took the loss as a reliever. The sophomore pitched four innings and allowed two runs while striking out five. Bre Haislip was the starter and pitched three innings.
Kenley Minor finished the day 2-for-3, while Broemmer and Hicks added a home run each. Katy Huels, Kynadee Warner, Allie Waldron, and Parker Holcombe each added a hit.
Game 2: Racers 7, Beacons 6
The second game of the afternoon got off to a much faster start than the first, with Valparaiso scoring two runs in the opening inning and one more in the third.
Riley Jestadt sparked the offense for Murray State in the fourth inning with a two-RBI single. Lily Wolf then tied the game 3-3 by reaching home on a play that saw Ailey Schyck get caught stealing.
Valparaiso struck back with a run in the following inning, and the Racers responded with two of their own. Adison Hicks scored on a wild pitch before Allie Waldron sent Kynadee Warner home on a bunt, making it 5-4.
The game continued to go back and forth in the later innings as Parker Holcombe put the Racers ahead 6-4 on a sacrifice bunt by Adison Hicks before the Beacons forced extra innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.
After the Beacons could not score in the top of the inning, the Racers got to work in the bottom of the eighth. Ava Ozment got the inning started with a leadoff single before Reagan Towns came in as a pinch runner. Ailey Schyck reached on a bunt single that sent Towns to third base. After Towns advanced to third on an Adison Hicks sacrifice, Kynadee Warner drove in the winning run with a single through the left side.
Karlye Graber (4-4) got the win after starting and being re-entered in the final innings. Graber recorded three strikeouts while allowing three earned runs and six hits. Raylee Roby and Bre Haislip appeared in relief.
Kynadee Warner went 3-for-5 at the plate, including the winning RBI single. Riley Jestadt had one hit in her only plate appearance with two RBI, and Ailey Schyck went 3-for-4. Adison Hicks had one RBI.
