Murray State Returns at UIC

The Murray State Racers (13-17, 5-5 MVC) fell to the Austin Peay Governors (20-13, 2-4 ASUN) 7-2 in a Wednesday afternoon contest at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky.

Both teams finished the day with seven hits and two errors, as the Governors left 10 runners on base and the Racers left nine.

Murray State got on the board first in the opening inning, as Parker Holcombe singled up the middle to score Allie Waldron after the freshman hit a double in the previous at-bat.

Austin Peay answered back the following inning with four runs in the top of the second, including the first of two home runs on the afternoon by Brie Howard, a three-run shot. She followed that up with another home run in the fourth that extended the deficit to 5-1 for the Racers.

Ailey Schyck responded with a towering home run of her own, lofting a solo shot over the fence in left-center that cut the deficit to 5-2 before Austin Peay added two more in the fifth.

Hailey Brereton (1-4) took the loss after pitching one inning as the starter, giving up one hit and three earned runs, and walking five. Bre Haislip pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief, allowing four earned runs, walking one, and getting the only strikeout of the day for Murray State pitchers. Karlye Graber pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and walking one.

Parker Holcombe went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Allie Waldron went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Ailey Schyck went 1-for-1 with a home run and a pair of walks. Bailey Broemmer and Katy Huels each had a hit as well.

Following a weekend off, the Racers return to action on April 3-4 in Chicago, Illinois, against the UIC Flames, with a Friday doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. CDT and a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. CDT.
