3/5/2026 2:50:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Murray State head men's basketball coach Ryan Miller, who has reached more than a few program milestones in his debut season, was named to the watch list for the Joe B. Hall Award by CollegeInsider.com.
Â
The Joe B. Hall Award is presented annually to the top first-year head coach in the country. It is named in honor of the legendary Kentucky coach and given during Final Four week.
Â
This recognition places Miller among the elite first-year head coaches in NCAA Division I basketball, a year after the award resided in the MVC when Drake's Ben McCullum was named the winner.
Â
Hired in March 2025, Miller rebuilt the Racers' roster as one of only nine coaches in NCAA D-I that had a team entirely made up by 15 newcomers.
Â
In his first season in the Missouri Valley Conference, Miller's Racers go into Arch Madness this week in St. Louis with their best seed (No. 4) in their four seasons in the league and their 12 conference wins is also team's best in The Valley. With a 20-11 mark, Miller put himself on a short list of four coaches at Murray State that won 20 games in their first season. The Racers also posted a 12-game winning streak during the season.
Â
Miller also saw several of his student-athletes get recognition from the MVC this week, including Fred King on All-MVC First Team, MVC Newcomer of the Year and he was added to the All-Newcomer and All-Defensive teams. Roman Domon, was named the MVC Freshman of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year and to the All-Bench and All-Freshman Teams. Javon Jackson was named Second Team All-MVC, giving Coach Miller nine total postseason awards in the Missouri Valley. In addition, Brayden Shorter was named to the MVC All-Scholar Team.
Â
The award is named after legendary coach Joe B. Hall who led the Kentucky Wildcats to the 1978 NCAA Championship and won 397 games between 1972-85.
