2007: Started all 11 games at safety...registered 70 tackles, including 43 solo...recorded one sack and two pass break-ups...ranked second on the team in tackles...posted five stops and a pass breakup in the opener against Louisville...had six tackles against Illinois State and Tennessee Tech...had eight tackles and a sack in the victory over Southeast Missouri...recovered a fumble and posted seven tackles against Tennessee State...posted a career-best 15 tackles against UT Martin.
2006: Played in 10 games and started the final five games of the 2006 season at free safety...finished his sophomore season with 42 tackles, including 26 solo stops and 1.5 tackles-for-loss, one interception and one pass break-up...ranked 39th in the OVC with an average of 4.1 tackles per game...had two double-digit tackle performances...totaled 10 stops against then-No. 16 Eastern Illinois...a week later he had 12 tackles against Southeast Missouri State...picked off his first collegiate pass against Samford and returned it 18 yards...member of the MSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
2005: Played a major role in the Racer defense as a freshman...saw action in 10 games and became a starter in the last six games at safety...tallied 29 tackles during the season, including 20 of the solo variety...had eight tackles against Jacksonville State...forced one fumble and had one fumble recovery...on special teams he blocked two kicks; both went back for touchdowns against Southeast Missouri and UT Martin..member of the MSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
HIGH SCHOOL: Was a first-team all-district selection as a junior and senior...also named to the Texas All-State Academic Football Team...had 135 tackles his senior year with five blocked kicks, and had an average of 14.8 yards per catch at receiver... also played basketball, baseball and track...broke school record in 100 meters (10.56)...family moved to Louisville after his senior year.
PERSONAL: Full name is Will Clay Werner...born on Feb. 24, 1986...son of Ronny and Cindy Werner...father is a very successful horse trainer...majoring in animal health equine science.
