Behind second-year coach Kathy Roulhac -- the coach who halted that dreadful conference slide -- the Lady Tigers have improved to 11-8, 3-1 in OVC play after a 3-0 win at Murray State tonight, 30-16, 30-21, 30-26.
Murray State head coach David Schwepker -- who, until last season, had been the most successful volleyball coach at TSU -- knew that Tennessee State would be a very changed team this season.
"They have always had good athletes," Schwepker said. "This year, they went out and got some good junior-college players, and we knew early on that they would be good."
Murray State (2-9, 0-4 OVC) had no answers for the hard-hitting Lady Tigers, who hit .301 to MSU's .098.
The Racers were led by freshman Alison Mugler and junior Katie Kemezys, who had eight kills each. Freshman libero Heather Norris had a team-high 16 digs, while Mugler added 10. Freshman setter Kelsey Hubert handed out 24 assists for MSU.
Tennessee State was paced by Kelley Smith, who had 13 kills, and Kelly Davis, who had 11. Tiara Maua had a double-double with 41 assists and 10 digs. Erika Godbolt had 18 digs, while Katrelle Armwood had 15. Smith also had four blocks, while Davis and Kara Kiefer had three apiece.
"They are the best team in the conference that I've seen so far," Schwepker said. "We are still struggling with out passing and offense, and we have just got to keep working it."
Murray State begins a four-match road swing this weekend, beginning at Morehead State on Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
