The Murray State Thoroughbreds outhit host Southeast Missouri in both games of their Ohio Valley Conference double-header this afternoon, but were unable to score any runs, as the host Redhawks won thr first game 1-0 and the second game 5-0.
MSU (7-20, 0-5 OVC) outhit SEMO 6-4 in the first game and 6-5 in the second game. The losses extended the 'Breds' losing skid to nine games, but second baseman Seth Hudson extended his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games.
Kalen Gibson (0-6, 0-2 OVC) would be a prime candidate for the Kirk Rueter Non-Support Award, as he pitched a gem in the Game 1 pitchers' duel. (Former 'Breds pitcher Rueter rarely got -- and, thankfully, didn't need -- much run support as a pitcher with the San Francisco Giants.) Gibson allowed just an unearned run on four hits, striking out seven and walking one in the complete-game effort. He allowed only two runs in each of his previous two starts, both 2-1 losses.
Chaz Ebert and Jason Payton each got a co-game-high two hits in the game for Murray State. Levi Olson of SEMO (9-14, 2-3 OVC) also had two hits.
In the field, catcher Payton and right fielder Brett Mullins had seven putouts apiece, while second baseman Seth Hudson had a team-high two assists. For the Redhawks, first baseman Aaron Rave had eight putouts, while shortstop Robby Moore had four assists.
SEMO's Jamie McAlister (4-4) won the mound duel, allowing no runs on six hits, striking out six and walking none in 8-1/3 innings. Josh Parham picked up his first save of the season, striking out one of the minimum two batters he faced.
In the second game, Southeast Missouri again scored an unearned run in the first inning, then another scored on a two-run shot by Omar Padilla in the third inning to bolster SEMO to the 5-0 win.
Michal Perconte (2-3, 0-2 OVC) got his league-leading third complete game in the effort, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out seven and walking one in six innings. His counterpart, Anthony Maupin (2-3), also went the distance, allowing no runs on six hits, striking out fiveand walking two in seven innings.
Six 'Breds hitters each had one hit in the game, with Hudson picking up a double for MSU. For SEMO, five batters had a hit apiece, with Jordan Payne hitting a double and Padilla popping his third home run of the season.
In the field, Payton had a co-game-high seven putouts behind the plate, while four fielders had one assist each. For SEMO, Rave had seven putouts at first, with Moore getting five assists at short.
"Kalen Gibson was just outstanding," said MSU head coach Rob McDonald. "He certainly pitched well enough to win. Both pitchers were really outstanding. They both dominated the game.
"The first thing you've got to do is get base runners, then you've got to drive them home. We're getting the base runners; we're getting them on, but we've got to drive them home. We've got to have some guys start stepping up and driving some people home."
The same teams will meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the third game of the series. Fans can tune in locally at Murray's WRKY (1130 AM) or worldwide on the Internet at www.GoRacers.com.
