'Breds Drop Game In Late Innings, 16-13

For Murray State, 13 runs was enough to seep each game of yesterday's double-header at Eastern Kentucky, but today, it wasn't quite enough, as the 'Breds let a 13-8 lead slip away in the late innings, losing today's Ohio Valley Conference battle 16-13 to EKU.
The 'Breds' relief pitchers allowed 10 runs on nine hits over the last two innings, with no strikeouts and four walks.
Eastern Kentucky (18-14, 7-4 OVC) scored first in the second inning, but Murray State (10-26, 3-9 OVC) tied the game with a run in the third. EKU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, but MSU retied the game with a run in the fourth inning, then plated six runs in the fifth to go ahead 8-2.
The Colonels added another run in the bottom of the fifth, and MSU added two in the seventh to take a 10-3 lead. Eastern Kentucky plated five runs in the seventh, Murray had three runs score in the eighth to go ahead 13-8, but EKU scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 16-13 win.
Five 'Breds batters had two hits apiece to lead the team. Chaz Ebert, Lincoln Kent and James Akin each had doubles for MSU. Skin went 2-for-4 in place of second baseman Seth Hudson, who sprained his wrist yesterday. Akin also scored two runs and drove in three.
For the Colonels, Chris O'Dell went 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs.
In the field, first baseman Brett Wilson had a game-high eight putouts, while shortstop Justin Yount had a game-high six assists. For EKU, first baseman Charlie Yarbrough and catcher Joe Oliver each had six putouts, while two players had two assists each.
On the mound, Jon Newton (2-5) took the loss, the fourth of six MSU pitchers in the game, allowing four runs on three hits, walking one in one-third of an inning. Michal Perconte started the game, allowing six runs on 10 hits, striking out three and walking three in six-plus innings.
For Eastern Kentucky, reliever Michael Mulholland (3-1) got the win, allowing seven runs on six hits, striking out three and walking seven in 3-2/3 innings, while David Owens got his first save of the season.
Murray State visits Evansville on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game.
