RACERS-SYCAMORES BATTLE FOR 10TH TIME
The Murray State Racers take to the road again for a Wednesday 6 p.m. central time tip in Terre Haute, Ind. against the Indiana State Sycamores. The Racers are coming off their best performance of the young season in an 89-61 win over Western Kentucky at the Regional Special Events Center on Saturday. Freshman Ivan Aska led the way for MSU with 20 points, while Isacc Miles scored 15, Danero Thomas and Jewuan Long each added 12. The Racers played great defense in holding the Hillltoppers to 39 percent shooting while winning the rebound battle 39-27.
ISU SCOUTING REPORT
The Sycamores enter the game with a 0-2 mark after an 86-79 loss at Northern Illinois on Nov. 18. Sunday, ISU lost its home opener to North Texas 80-69. The Sycamores had the lead against the Huskies 33-31 at half, but were outscored 49-36 in the second half. Richard Carl scored 17 for ISU, while Josh Crawford had 16, Aaron Carter 12, and Rashad Reed 11. ISU shot 38 percent from the field (24-62) and 37 percent (6-16) from three-point range. UNI won the rebound stat 42-34.
THE RACER CHALLENGE
The Racers once again have a challenging preconference portion of their schedule. After the ISU game, the Racers hit the road for a Dec. 13 at Missouri and make a trip to Puerto Rico (Dec. 20-22) to play South Florida, Oral Roberts, and Wright State. The Racers will meet Niagara (Dec. 29) in Chattanooga, Tenn.
SERIES HISTORY
The two have a history spanning 10 games with the first played in 1945. MSU played the Sycamores last season in February in the ESPN BracketBusters game at the RSEC and had an 11-point lead before losing 79-62. The Racers trail the all-time series with ISU 7-2 with their two wins both coming at home 85-39 in 2002, and in 1945 in a 54-45 victory. MSU will be looking for their first win at ISU. MSU lost there in 1945, 1946, 1975, and 2001.
KNOCKING DOWN THE FREE THROWS
The Racers had a big night from the free throw line Saturday against WKU going 22-of-23 good for a percentage of .957. Only MSU's 24-of-24 effort against Austin Peay in 1966 was better. The Racers are working on improving their free throw percentage for an amazing fourth straight season. Last season they shot a .725 percentage and are at .857 through three games this season hitting 54-of-63.

MSU VS THE MO VALLEY:
The Racers haven't played a large number of games against Missouri Valley Conference schools. Other than Southern Illinois and Indiana State, the only other MVC team they've played recently was Bradley in the 1993 NIT. MSU is 4-10 against MVC schools since 1991. One of MSU's big wins came against SIU 68-65 in the RSEC opener in 1998.NEXT UP ON THE SCHEDULE:
Murray State returns home to host St. Catharine Saturday in a 7 p.m. tip at the RSEC. Indiana State has a 2 p.m. game at DePaul on Saturday.FRESHMAN DEBUT:
Ivan Aska earned OVC Co-Freshman of theWeek honors Nov. 24. Aska, a 6-7 forward from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in MSU games against Arkansas State and Western Kentucky. He scored 20 points against WKU, becoming the first MSU freshman to score 20 or more points in a game since Cuthbert Victor scored 27 against Tennessee State on Jan. 30, 2001. Aska added 13 points in the Racers road 55-47 loss to Arkansas State Nov. 19. For the week, Aska hit 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the field and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the free throw line. He shared the OVC honor with Jacksonville State's Geddes Robinson.LONG SCORES CAREER BEST:
Jewuan Long's 12 point performance against WKU on Nov. 22 was his career high. The previous best for the sophomore was 11 last season as a freshman against Avila on Nov. 23, 2007.TOP-10 RSEC CROWD:
The announced attendance of 7,038 the MSU-WKU game Nov. 22 was the seventh largest crowd in RSEC history, and the seventh crowd of more than 7,000. The last was when WKU visited the RSEC in 2002 when 7,288 watched the game. The record for the RSEC is the 8,602 that watched the Racers take on SE Missouri in 1999.GETTING TO THE LINE:
Through three games, the Racers have made 54 free throws, nearly more than the opponent has attempted, 59.AT THE INTERMISSION:

The Racers have an excellent mark when getting to the five minute mark of the second half with the lead. MSU is 33-8 in the last three seasons.CAREER NUMBERS:
Tyler Holloway has a good chance of becoming the 34th member of the MSU 1,000-Point club. He has 824 points and is 176 points from the magic number. Danero Thomas is more than half way to 1,000 now with 546. Kevin Thomas has 147 career assists. Tony Easley has led the Racers in blocks in two straight seasons and has 47 in his career. He needs 22 to catch 11th place Danny Jarrett (1976-78) and Mike Lahm (1983-85). WHAT A STREAK: One story line in the 08-09 season will be Murray State's push to ensure another winning season. MSU has 21 straight winning seasons which is tied for fourth in the nation with Connecticut. The Racers share the same neighborhood with first place Syracuse (38 years), Oklahoma (27 years) and Kansas (25 years). HOME OPENER:
The Racers defeated Lyon College in their home opener 84-46. MSU has won 19 straight home openers and haven't lost one since 1989 when they fell to Southern Illinois in triple overtime at old Racer Arena. MSU is 11-0 in home openers in the RSEC.POSTSEASON DREAMS:
When the Racers get to the OVC Tournament at the end of the regular season, they want to secure a home game at the very least, the top four seeds host the bottom four seeds at campus sites in the quarterfinals. Since the league began staging campus games, the Racers have always hosted a first round game in 12 seasons. MSU has been the first seed four times, second seed twice, third seed four times and the fourth seed twice.EARNING HARDWARE:
When the All-OVC awards roll around at the end of the season, the Racers will looking to have an All-OVC First Team selection again. They've had one in 27 of the last 28 seasons.GRAND SLAM OF STATS:
Murray State ended the 2007-08 season with a rare distinction in NCAA D-I. In conference play, MSU was the only team to lead its league in these four categories: field goal percentage (.498), field goal defense (.412), three-point percentage (.408), and three-point defense (.321). There were only five teams in the nation that led their conferences in three of the categories: Kansas (Big-12), American (Patriot), Stephen F. Austin (Southland), Western Kentucky (Sun Belt), and Gonzaga (West Coast).HOME SWEET HOME:
The Regional Special Events Center continues to be a great home court advantage for the Racers who were 14-2 last season and upped their mark in their 11th season of basketball in the RSEC to 121-23 (.840) with the win over WKU. MSU is 16-2 in the last two seasons.OVC HOME STREAK:
When the Racers play their first home OVC game at the RSEC Jan. 8 against Tennessee State, MSU will carry an eight-game OVC home streak. Isaiah Canaan, a 5-11 guard from Biloxi, Miss. and Edward Daniel, a 6-7 forward from Birmingham, Ala. signed a national letter of intent to play for the Racers.Isaiah Canaan
(pronounced Cannon) is an outstanding talent from Biloxi High School where he ended his junior season with Mississippi 5A All-State honors. He was also named to the state all-tournament team after Biloxi advanced to the semifinals. Canaan was named to the Mississippi All-South State Tournament Team, the Sun Herald All-Region Team, and 5A-8 All District Team. He averaged 20 points and seven assists per game. Canaan is ranked as the fourth-best player in Mississippi by MagnoliaPreps.com, and is a 4-star prospect (out of five) by Centercourtbasketball.com. The Clarion Ledger listed him among their Dandy Dozen.Edward Daniel
is a 6-7 power forward with tremendous potential from Woodlawn High School. He has been named to the Birmingham News class of 2009 super seniors, ranked seventh on the list of the top-12 players in the metro area. Daniel is a three-star Rivals.com recruit who averaged 14 points, 15 rebounds, and two blocks per game as a junior where he was First Team All-City and Alabama 5A All-State Honorable Mention. Daniel played AAU ball with the Birmingham Ice last summer and was chosen as the most athletic player at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in North Carolina.Colin Slotter
is a 6-5 wing/forward from North Cobb High School in Kennesaw, Ga. Slotter averaged 12 points and five rebounds last season as a junior and impressed many with his play over the summer at the Reebok All-American camp and Reebok Summer Championships.
