MSU Takes To The Road For Big OVC Weekend
2/5/2008 6:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The Murray State Racers hit the road for what has been known for years as the "Death Valley" trip. The first stop on the tour is in Richmond for a Thursday 8 p.m. CST tip with the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. The game will be aired on ESPNU. The Racers are coming off a 95-85 win last Saturday at home against Jacksonville State. The game was played at broken pace when 57 total fouls were called leading to 76 combined free throws. Junior guard Kevin Thomas scored a career-high 23 points in the MSU win, while sophomore forward Marvin Williams had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The win was a nice rebound from the Racers' overtime loss at Austin Peay Jan. 31. MSU is 10-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference, one game behind the first place Governors.
It's no coincidence when the Racers protect and share the basketball, their chances of winning are better. In Murray State's 14 OVC games, they've had a positive assist-turnover ratio in all 10 wins, and a negative ratio in all four losses. The Racers continue to lead the league in what might be called a "Grand Slam" of statistics. MSU ranks first in field goal percentage (.499), field goal defense (.422), three-point percentage (.417), and three-point defense (.326). Murray State is also one of the best teams from the free throw line where they're ranked second in the OVC with a rate of nearly 75 percent.
The Racers are 10-4 in the OVC and all four of their losses have been very close games. Two of the losses were in overtime: Jan. 3, MSU dropped an 82-80 game at Eastern Illinois, and again Jan. 31 at Austin Peay 92-87. In December, MSU had a late lead slip away in a 59-58 loss to Eastern Kentucky. The most hurtful loss came Dec. 20 when Samford hit a three-pointer for a 65-64 win in a game that was controversial because the clock never started on the final play. MSU's four losses have come by a total of 10 points.
