Racers Head East for Two Weekend Matches

The Murray State volleyball team will head back out on the road for two Ohio Valley Conference matches over the weekend. The Racers will first face Morehead State, Friday, Oct. 8 in Wetherby Gym at 6 p.m. and then travel to battle with Eastern Kentucky, Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. in McBrayer Arena.
Scouting Morehead State
The Eagles have had a strong season, with a 12-6 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in the OVC standings heading into this weekend's matches. Morehead has been victorious in its last four matches and six of the last seven.
The Eagles have three key hitters to watch, with all having over 400 attempts and 150 kills. Holly Evans is the main threat, with a .358 (186k-41e-405ta) hitting percentage and 53 (4-49) total blocks on the season. She is the only player on the team with a hitting percentage over .240. Kaitlin Craven sees most of the attatck atempts, with 538 and has a .219 (187k-69e-538ta) hitting percentage. The other key hitter is Ellie Roberson, with 456 attempts and 157 kills, but only a .169 (157k-80e-456ta) hitting percentage.
Annie Gruenschlaeger has tallied a team-best 71 (8-63) blocks and Liz Schuler is the key defensive player, with 5.22 digs per game.
As a team, Morehead is leading on the season box score in all the key statistical categories, except blocking. The Eagles trail their opponents 1.9 blocks per set to 2.1. However, Morehead has a clear advantage in the offensive categories, with a .208 (865k-376e-2347ta) hitting percentage to a .176 (735k-348e-2200ta) mark by its opponents and 1.6 to 0.7 service aces per set.
Against the Eagles
A year ago Morehead took both matches in the series. The Racers had four players with 10+ kills, with Becca Lamb leading the team with 27. Setter Jade Guo had 13 kills and a .379 hitting percentage, while Mary Cunningham hit .360 (12k-3e-25ta).
The key statistical ares on the box score were in the hitting percentage and service ace columns, where the Eagles had advantages. Murray State was out-hit .208 (91k-39e-250ta) to .276 (108k-34e-368ta) and had 12 service aces land against them to just four on the other side of the court.
Morehead has four returners with 10+ kills as well, with Kaitlin Craven leading the team with 33 and a .309 (33k-8e-81ta) hitting percentage. Emma Keough hit at a .356 (22k-6e-45ta) mark and added 10 blocks.

Scouting Eastern Kentucky
The Colonels are 4-11 overall and 3-3 in the league standings after a 3-2 victory over Austin Peay Tuesday night. EKU has played three five-set matches in its first six conference outings in 2010, winning two.
The Colonels have three hitters with over 100 kills, but two that see the majority of the attack attempts. Ashley Edmond has a team high 191 kills and leads the team with 605 attempts, but has a .139 (191k-107e-605ta) hitting percentage. Lauren Snyder has a .148 (146k-77e-465ta) mark. Autumn Harms is the third hitter with 100+ kills (115) and she leads the team with 29 (6-23) blocks. Abby O'Connor is the key defensive presence for EKU, with 5.69 digs per set.
As a team, the Colonels are hitting .150 (657k-348e-2062ta), while allowing their opponents to hit .214 (753k-300e-2114ta). The only area on the box score where EKU has a slight advantage over its opponents is in the digs column, with 15.7 to 15.2 digs per set.
Against the Colonels
The Racers and EKU earned wins on their home courts in 2009. Murray State had two players with over 20 kills and another two with 10+ kills in the series. Logan Su hit .333 (24k-6e-54ta), while Ashley Nenninger added 24 kills and a .246 hitting percentage.
The Racers earned advantage in hitting percentage, .276 (96k-29e-251ta) to .216 (99k-41e-268ta), and in blocking (16 to 11), but the rest of the box score was close.

Guo Garnering Honors -Again
Junior setter Jade Guo earned her second consecutive OVC Setter of the Week honors after leading the team with a .426 hitting percentage and 10 blocks. She also added a team-best four service aces. The DaTong, Shanxi, China native recorded a pair of triple-doubles last week. Against Eastern Illinois, she tallied 10 kills, 39 assists and 11 digs. Guo followed that up with 10 kills, 39 assists and 14 digs versus Tennessee Tech. Her 10 kills versus EIU and TTU were career bests.
Making the List
Senior Becca Lamb became just the ninth Racers player to record 1,000 Kills in their career, when she landed her first kill against Tennessee Tech (Oct. 2) in Racer Arena. The Highland, Ill., native has now tallied 1,011 kills and could end her career anywhere from third to ninth on the all-time kill list at MSU.
The last player to garner 1,000 kills was Allison Mugler during the 2008 campaign. Fellow seniors Sara Hayden and Ashley Nenninger are also trying to make the list this season. Hayden needs 136 kills and Nenninger needs 181. If all three make their way onto the list it will be the first time that three players from the same class will record 1,000 kills. Kim Koehler and Lea Ann Allen both made the list as seniors during the 1990 campaign.
