The Racers (7-11, 3-4 OVC) were led by senior Ashley Nenninger, who tallied a .400 attack percentage off 12 kills, two errors and 25 total attempts. Junior Kayleah Sauer led the team defensively with 23 digs, while sophomore Lydia Orf added 13.
The Eagles (13-6, 7-0) opened the first set with a quick two points and built their lead to four points early in the set with two short runs. Morehead State was up 6-10 when the Racers mounted a come-back and tied the set at 11, with a 5-1 run. That was as close as the Eagles would let Murray State get in the set, as they counted with a 4-0 run that gave them the lead for good on way to the 16-25 win.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle for control, with the Morehead State earning an early 2-0 advantage that they held for most of the set. The Eagles went up 13-16, but the Racers quickly countered with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 16 again. The teams traded the next two serves before Morehead State went on another key run, this time 3-0, which gave them the lead for the rest of the set and enough momentum to earn the 20-25 win.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 0-4 lead in the third set and did not allow the Racers to earn more than one point in a row, while going on another 4-0 run, until Morehead was already leading by six (2-8). Besides a few 3-0 runs, MSU was not able to get closer than a four-point deficit in the rest of the set. Morehead State kept pushing the momentum earned the set and match victory, 20-25.
The Eagles led the Racers in all areas on the box score, including a decisive difference in the service ace column. Morehead State landed six service aces, while MSU garnered just one.
The Racers will be in action again, Saturday, Oct. 9 when they face Eastern Kentucky at McBrayer Arena in Richmond, Ky. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (CST).
