Box Score
The Racers were led by red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey who tallied her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Winfrey was one of three MSU players to record over 10 points, with sophomore Mariah Robinson leading the team with 19 and sophomore Tessa Elkins recording a career-best 10.
The teams were evenly matched for most of the first half, trading the lead 12 times and forcing seven ties. The Racers largest lead of the stanza was four points, but the Skyhawks earned an eight-point advantage in the final three minutes of the half, with an 8-2 run. The run gave UTM a 45-39 lead heading into the locker room at half time.
The Racers held the disadvantage around nine points for the first two minutes of the second half before a volley of three's by the Skyhawks increased the lead to double-digits. The lead increased to as many as 19 points in the half (just under 10 minutes to play). Over the next three minutes MSU went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead back down to 11, but another triple by UTM cut off the rally.
The Racers kept fighting, but could not cut the lead to under double-digits until 1:41 remained in the game. The lead was cut to eight with free throws, but was quickly regained and held through the rest of the contest.
MSU had a strong shooting night, hitting 42.6 percent of its shots from the field. However, the Skyhawks shot 50 percent from the field and from three-point range. The Racers turned the ball over a season-low seven times, while forcing UTM into 16 turnovers. MSU took advantage of the difference, scoring 20 points off Skyhawk turnovers.
The Racers will now have seven days off for the holidays before their next game. MSU will begin the longest home stand of the 2010-11 campaign when they host SIU Edwardsville, Thursday, Dec. 30 at the CFSB Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
Notes: Junior Kayla Lowe tallied six straight points in the opening minutes of the first half…junior Mallory Schwab had a career-best two blocks after the first 20-minutes of action.
