SIUE started the first half on a 4-1 run before the Racers scored their first field goal of the stanza. Junior Mallory Schwab then started a 6-0 MSU run, with the team's first field goal at 16:24, that helped the Racers gain a lead that they never let go of the rest of the half. MSU increased the advantage to as many as eight before the Cougars (2-11) started a 5-1 run to cut the deficit back to four. The Racers countered with a 4-0 run to push the lead back to eight before SIUE returned the favor with a 5-0 run. The teams then traded baskets over the final two minutes of the half, which allowed MSU to go into the locker room with a 30-26 advantage.
The Racers came out strong in the second half and used a 4-0 run to rebuild their advantage to eight points in the first 2:30 of the stanza. The Cougars countered with a 4-0 run of their own, but five quick points by MSU over the next minute pushed the lead out to nine. The Racers never let up in the half, earning their first double-digit lead with 9:30 left to play and only allowing the lead to go to single digits twice in the next minute. The rest of the game, MSU controlled at least a 10-point advantage on its way to the victory. The Racers led by as many as 14 points in the game and held SIUE scoreless for long stretches the rest of the game.
For the second game in-a-row, MSU shot over 40 percent from the field, hitting 46.3 percent of their shots from the field and 44.4 percent of those from beyond the arc, compared to 38.1 percent and 25 percent by SIUE. The Racers also earned a 40-37 advantage in rebounding. MSU hit eight three-pointers in the game, while holding the Cougars to just three
The Racers will continue their four-game home stand next week, with three games in five days. MSU first faces IUPUI, Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center. Tennessee State and Austin Peay will then come to town for a weekend OVC series.
Notes: Redshirt-freshman Jessica Winfrey tallied 10 rebounds before the end of the first half…this was the first time in 2010-11 that MSU had four players record double-digit point totals in a single game…the 14-point lead was the first double-digit lead in a game for the Racers since Dec. 4 at Morehead State and the largest since a 26-point advantage over Mid-Con (Nov. 15).
