The Murray State softball team split a double header with Trevecca Nazarene at Racer Field at Murray-Calloway County Park. The Racers (10-19, 4-5 OVC) fell in the opening game of the day, 7-3, before coming back to defeat the Trojans (28-9) 7-4 in the second.
Juniors Kristen Broadway and Jenna Bradley led MSU to victory in the game two. Broadway earned her fifth victory in the circle, recording five strike outs and zero walks. The Golconda, Ill., native also added four strike outs in her appearance in game one. Bradley garnered three hits on the day, including a two-run home run in the third inning of game two. The Trilla, Ill., native added five RBIs to her season total.
"I was pleased with the effort from both Kristen Broadway and Jenna Bradley today," said head coach Jay Pyron. "Kristen came to the game prepared and threw a great game in the circle. Jenna swung the bat well in the second game and really set the tone at the plate."
Freshman Megan Belio also tallied three hits on the day, while sophomore Megan Glosser and freshmen Kaitlyn England and Ellyn Troup each added two hits each.
The Racers return to action, Thursday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at Racer Field when they host Bethel for double header action. MSU also hosts Austin Peay in an Ohio Valley Conference series April 10-11 at 1 p.m. each day.
Game 2 - Murray State 7, Trevecca Nazarene 4
The Racers came out ready to play in the second game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Megan Belio started the game off with a single to left field and advanced to second on an error. Belio advanced to third and junior Megan Glosser reached with a well-placed bunt to third base to put herself in scoring position. Both runners then scored when a ball got past the catcher and her throw was errant to the pitcher, who was covering home plate.
MSU added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to go up 4-0. Glosser reached on her second bunt of the game and was on base when junior Jenna Bradley hit her eighth home run of the season over the center field fence.
The Racers held the Trojans scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, when TNU tied the game at four off of a walk and three hits. MSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead for good.
Belio started the inning off by reaching on an error and was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Glosser. She then scored on a double down the left field line by Bradley. Bradley was driven in on a sacrifice fly by junior Lauren Buch.
MSU added one final run in the bottom of the sixth when Belio walked and advanced to third on a pass ball and wild pitch. That put her in scoring position for a sacrifice fly by Bradley to end the scoring in the game.
Game 1 - TNU 7, Murray State 3
Both teams came out ready to swing in the first inning, as they both scored two runs in the first to knot the game at 2-2. Freshman Megan Belio started the game for MSU by reaching on a throwing error, which also allowed her to advance to second. She then scored on a single up the middle by freshman Ellyn Troup. Troup ended at second and was driven in by a double to right field by junior Jenna Bradley.
That is how the score remained until the third inning, when again both teams had runs cross the plate. However, the Trojans put up five more in the top of the inning, while MSU was only able to garner one more for the 7-3 final.
Bradley walked to start the third inning at the plate for the Racers and was advanced to second and then third by the next two batters. Junior Stephanie Mattocks hit a single up the middle that allowed Bradley to cross the plate.
