The Murray State men's basketball team held its annual media day at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., as they get ready to open the 2011-12 season next week.
MSU men's coach Steve Prohm , who was hired May 23 to replace Billy Kennedy who became head coach at Texas A&M, is ready to take his first edition of the Racers to the floor next Tuesday for an exhibition game against Bethel.
“Obvious today (having media day) means that basketball is just around the corner and we're excited about it,” Prohm said. “I'm excited about where we could go this season. We have a very good guard in Isaiah Canaan and post player in Ivan Aska and if we can get everyone to get into the mold, I think we have a chance to be a very good team.”
The Racers enter the 2011-12 season with eyes on winning their third straight Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship. MSU's 22 titles and 14 tournament titles (including 14 NCAA appearances) are tops in the league. Since 1990, MSU's 11 league titles are tied for second in the nation with Duke and Gonzaga and trails only Kentucky with 12.
Of course, MSU's steadily built consecutive winning seasons streak is now at 24.
After hosting Bethel (Nov. 8) in an exhibition game, the Racers open the season against Harris-Stowe (Nov. 11) at home before taking to the road for the first time at Morgan State (Nov. 14) in Baltimore, Md. Also looming for MSU is a game at UAB (Nov. 20) before they make the long trip to Anchorage for the Great Alaska Shootout during Thanksgiving Week.
