The Murray State Racers get their first taste of playing away from home when they travel to Baltimore, Md. to play the Morgan State Bears at Talmadge Hill Fieldhouse on Monday (Nov. 14) in a 6 p.m. central time tip.
Both teams played their opener on Friday. Murray State won it's 22nd consecutive home opener in a 74-49 win over Harris-Stowe. The Bears opened in Cincinnati, Ohio with a 74-63 loss to #15 Xavier.
The two teams have met only once. It was February of 2010 in the ESPNU BracketBusters event. The Racers won at home in the CFSB Center 75-66. MSU's trip to Morgan State is part of the agreement to return the game within two seasons.
The Racers got the Steve Prohm era off to a good start last Friday when they defeated NAIA squad Harris-Stowe 76-49. In the process, the Racers made Prohm the 10th coach in 15 in their 87-year history to win his first game. It also marked the 22nd straight season for MSU to win it's home opener. The win also made the Racers 61-9 (.871) all-time in non-conference games at the CFSB Center.
With the Racers' 87th campaign now underway, the 2011-12 season will be a quest for the team.
The Racers enter the 2011-12 season with eyes on winning their third straight OVC regular season championship. MSU's 22 titles and 14 tournament titles, including 14 NCAA appearances, are tops in the league. Since 1990, MSU's 11 league titles are tied for second in the nation with Duke and Gonzaga and trails only Kentucky with 12.
When it comes to consistent performance, the Racers rank among the best in the game. Murray State's current streak of 24 consecutive winning seasons is tied with Connecticut for the fourth longest current streak and trails only Syracuse (41), Kansas (28) and Arizona (27).
Over the last two seasons, the Racers are 5-5 in road non-conference games. Last season they were 2-2 with wins at Chattanooga and SIU Edwardsville. They had losses at Mississippi and Missouri State (In the National Invitation Tournament).
