GAME NOTES
Murray State (6-4, 4-3 OVC) vs. Southeast Missouri (3-7, 2-5 OVC)
Nov. 19 - 1 p.m.
Houck Stadium - Cape Girardeau, Mo.
STORY LINES
Murray State enters the final weekend of the regular season in search of their seventh win of the season. The Racers have not won seven games in a season since the 2004 season. A victory will also give the Racers 13 victories over the past two seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher. MSU won 13 games in the five years before Hatcher took over.
The Racers have dominated the all-time series with the Redhawks, but it is SEMO who has held the advantage the past two meetings. SEMO has won four of the last six meetings after the Racers put together 12-straight victories.
Senior kicker Kienan Cullen was named the adidas OVC Specialist of the Week for the second-straight week after he tied a school record by going 5-for-5 on field goals. He also completed a 21-yard pass on a fake punt.
Junior quarterback Casey Brockman became just the second Racer to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season. Brockman enters the final game of the regular season with 3,054 yards. Justin Fuente (1999) holds the MSU and OVC single-season record with 3,498 yards. Brockman ranks fourth on the OVC passing list, behind Jack Tomco (3,132), Tony Romo (3,165) and Fuente.
The Game
The Racers close out the 2011 regular season on the roadat Southeast Missouri. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Houck Stadium.
vs. SEMO
The Racers lead the all-time series 36-8-1, but the Redhawks have won two-straight, and four of the last six. MSU is 17-5-1 in games played in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Postseason Hopes
The Racers are still clinging to postseason hopes. In order to be eligible, the Racer must win their final game to reach the magic number of seven Division I wins. MSU will also need help from other teams on the bubble.
A Victory vs. SEMO...
Would give the Racers their first seven-win season since 2004. It would also raise the win total in the Chris Hatcher era to 13, equalling the total number of wins the previous five seasons.
Hatcher in Elite Company
A second-straight winning season makes Chris Hatcher the fourth MSU coach to post winning seasons in his first two years as head coach, and just the second in the modern era. Carlisle Cutchin led the Racers to winning seasons in 1925-26, Roy Stewart in 1932-33 and Denver Johnson in 1997-98 are the others.
Harris in Search of 1,000 Yards
Senior Mike Harris enters the final game of the regular season needing 112 yards to become the 10th Racers to rush for 1,000 yards. Harris is averaging 98.7 yards a game and has five 100-yard games. He was on pace for 1,000 yards last season, but an ankle injury limited him to just four carries over the final two games.
Defense Scores Twice
The Racer defense did its par to light up the scoreboard against Austin Peay as they scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half. Qua Huzzie returned a fumble 24 yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage, while Julian Whitead returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Racer defense has scored three touchdowns over the past three games.
Cullen Ties FG Record
Kicker Kienan Cullen tied a school record when he kicked five field goals against Austin Peay. He hit from 37, 33, 41, 30 and 22, to join Greg Duncan (1988) and Rob Hart (1996) atop the record book. For his efforts, Cullen was named the OVC Specialist of the Week, as well as The Sports Network/Fathead.com National Sepcial Teams Player of the Week.
3,000-Yard Man
Quarterback Casey Brockman continues to put up numbers this season as he became just the second Racer in school history to pass for more than 3,000 yards in a season. He enters the final game of the regular season with 3,054 yards and trails only Justin Fuente (3,498) on the single-season list.
Small Reaches 100
Lineback Sam Small posted 13 tackles against Austin Peay to pass the 100-tackle plateau this season. It marks the 26th time in the last 46 years that the Racers have a player reach 100 tackles.
Brockman Sets OVC Record
Junior quarterback Casey Brockman needs just 19 completions to break the OVC single-season record for completions. He has completed 260 passes this season, and looks to break the mark of 279 set by SEMO's Andrew Goodenough in 2004. Brockman also needs 72 pass attempts to break the attempts record.
Up Next
The Racers wait and see if they gain an at-large bid into the 2011 Playoffs.
