Racers Headed to Eastern Kentucky/Morehead State for final Regular-Season Road Trip

The Murray State volleyball team will be on the other side of Kentucky this weekend for its final regular-season road matches of the 2011 season. The Racers will first stop in Richmond, Ky., to face Eastern Kentucky at 5 p.m. (CST), Friday, Nov. 4. Murray State then continues on to face Morehead State, Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. (CST).
Match Notes
Scouting Eastern Kentucky
The Colonels are 13-14 overall and 8-8 in the OVC after going 6-4 in their last 10 matches. EKU has played better at home this season, with a 6-2 mark. The match with the Racers will break a two-way tie for fifth in the OVC standings.
The Colonels have two hitters that see more attempts than the rest of the team and one that stands out far above the rest. Ashley Edmond has recorded 1034 attempts this season and 341 kills, but has just a .167 (341k-168e-1034ta) hitting percentage. She also adds 45 blocks (5-40). Hannah Burkle is the other key hitter, with 296 kills and 755 attempts. She hits at a .196 (296k-148e-755ta) clip. Burkle is also a threat from the service line (16 aces) and at the net (89 blocks).
EKU is trailing its opponents in all but service aces and blocks on the season box score. The Colonels and their opponents are even with 1.6 blocks per set and they have a 1.3 to 1.0 advantage in service aces per set. EKU is hitting .174 on the season, but allowing just a .199 mark from its opponents.
The Series
The Racers own a 31-28 advantage in the all-time series after taking victories in the last three meetings. When playing in Richmond, the Colonels have a slight 13-12 lead after winning the last meeting on their home court in 2010.
Scouting Morehead State
The Eagles claimed the 2011 OVC Regular-Season title Nov. 1, with a 3-1 win over EKU. Morehead is now 20-6 overall and 15-1 in league action heading into the weekend.
The Eagles have two main hitters in Ellie Roberson and Aryn Bohannon. Both have attempted over 800 swings, with the next highest number on the team being 463. Roberson is hitting at a .233 (373k-157e-926ta) pace, with Bohannon hitting .179 (278k-134e-803ta). Bohannon is also a serving threat with 36 service aces.
Morehead State is ranked No. 11 in the nation in assists and No. 16 in kills per set and has four players individually ranked in the top-50. The Eagles lead their opponents in all the statistical categories except blocking, where they trail 2.2 to 1.9.
The Series
The Eagles are 36-26 against Murray State in the all-time series after winning the last six matches. The last Racers win over Morehead State was Nov. 21, 2008 in the OVC Championship semifinals. The Eagles also have a clear 19-8 lead in the series when played in Morehead.
Moving Up in the Career Charts
Three of the MSU players are currently on, or just shy of making, career lists in at least one category this season. Senior Mary Cunningham currently has 158 block assists, moving her into eighth on the career block assist charts at MSU. She needs five more to take over seventh (163-Becca Lamb).
Fellow senior Kayleah Sauer is already on the Racers career digs list, currently in second place (2,105). Sauer is 21 from the top spot that belongs to Heather Norris (2,125). The Louisville, Ky., native has averaged 550 digs per season in her first three years. Sauer also earned a spot on a second top-10 list, service aces. She has 105 career service aces, good for the No. 10 spot. She needs 17 to take over ninth from Norris (121).
Junior Lydia Orf is also making a push to join Sauer in the 1,000 Dig Club. The St. Charles, Mo., native has recorded 793 digs and needs 207 to become the 14th member of the club.
Reaching for Milestones
When the MSU volleyball team stepped onto the court this season they were going for several milestones for both the team and head coach David Schwepker. The teams first win (Sep. 16, 2011) marked the 400th for the volleyball program in its 29 year history and the 125th OVC win for head coach David Schwepker. This is during his time as the head coach of the Racers and while at Tennessee State. Schwepker earned his 125th conference win at MSU, with the Racers 3-0 win over Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 15).
With the Racers 3-2 win over UT Martin (Oct. 28, 2011), Schwepker also recorded in 200th career victory as a head coach. He now needs 12 wins to reach his 200th win while at the helm of the Racers.
Mahurin Making a Mark
Just as she is getting ready to make the switch from volleyball to basketball, freshman Beth Mahurin has turned up her performance on the volleyball court. In the last six matches, the Rockville, Ind., native has tallied career bests in kills three times, including 20 against UTM. She also has career-highs of five digs (SEMO) and 55 attempts (UTM). She has tallied 10+ kills in five of the last six matches and is hitting at a .232 (76k-29e-202ta) pace, while adding 13 digs and 11 blocks.
Krog Doubling It Up
Senior Teresa Krog had an outstanding performance against UT Martin (Oct. 28), earning her first career double-double. The Elgin, Ill., native tallied 15 kills and a career-best 13 digs against the Skyhawks.
Up Next
Murray State will end the regular season in the friendly confines of Racer Arena against Tennessee State (Nov. 11) and Austin Peay (Nov. 12). Friday's match will also be the annual Parent's Day and the Racers will present Murray-Calloway Country Regional Cancer Center with the check from the Swinging To Eliminate Cancer fundraiser. Prior to Saturday's match the senior's from the 2011 squad will be honored.
