The Murray State Rifle squad competed over the weekend at West Point, N.Y. against Army and Texas Christian.
The Racers finished third in the match after carding an aggregate 4636 score, while TCU finished first at 4692 and Army second at 4666.
The Racers performed at the top of their game and had their best score of the 2011-12 season.
"The whole team stepped up in a big way, just when we needed it,” MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar said. “This was an important weekend for us in a lot of ways. We needed it for a confidence boost going into the break and I think we got that."
Leading the way for MSU in smallbore was Kelsey Emme with a 581 good for a spot in eighth, while the Racers got a 576 from Bill Harvey for a spot in 11th place in the field of 25 competitors. In air rifle, Caroline Barber placed sixth with a 587, while Ashley Rose finished ninth with a 585.
"This team has been working hard to find its own identity,” Lollar added. “Sometimes it happens fast like last year, sometimes it takes time.”
"We have also had a good trip and saw some of the sights. Now it's time to make sure we have classes under control and finish the semester up in a good way."
The Racers return to action at home against Memphis on Jan. 14.
