The Murray State rifle team hosted the Memphis Tigers in a match of ranked teams Saturday at the Pat Spurgin Range in Murray, Ky.
When the shots were totaled, #11 Memphis had a close 12-point win (4640-4628) over the 10th ranked Racers. Memphis took the air rifle competition with a 4-point margin (2302-2298) and the air rifle competition by 8 points (2338-2330).
MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar looked forward to the squad's first time out after a long break between the fall portion of the season and 2012.
“We came out shooting just about where we ended the fall,” Lollar said. “But we have to get better. The competition this year is tough and it's going to be a fight to get into the field of eight for the NCAA Championships.”
The Racers were led by Kelsey Emme, with a strong 580 smallbore score and 588 air rifle, while Kyle Donnan made a strong contribution with a 577 and 581.
“Kelsey finished the fall strong, made a good showing at the Olympic Air Rifle Trials, and has picked up where she left off,” Lollar said. “We need Kyle to be consistent at the level he is capable of performing. He's working hard and I think he ready to shoot at his best.”
Michael Burzynski had his best day as a Racer, with 575 smallbore and 581 air rifle, with Kirsten Moyer shooting a solid 585 air rifle. Another impressive performance was turned in by freshman Marisca Mozeleski, with a 570 smallbore. Bill Harvey added one of his best days as a Racer with a 572 smallbore and 582 air rifle.
“Mikey has been steadily improving. I'm really proud of his effort,” Lollar added. “Kirsten was not able to train regularly in the fall because of illness. She is just getting her feet under her. Marisca has a chance to be a very good shooter. She shoots the sling well and gives herself a chance in smallbore. Bill has become a big part of this team and stepped into a new role this year."
The Racers get right back on the firing line Monday when Nebraska visits the Spurgin Range.
