The Murray State Racers ran away with a 77-32 exhibition win Tuesday over Bethel at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers did a lot of things right in their dress rehearsal for the 2011-12 season including a great defensive effort in which they held the Wildcats to 25 percent shooting on 11-of-44 shots from the field.
With 9:15 left in the first half, MSU completed a 9-0 run for a 20-7 lead and moments later went on a 12-0 run to lead 32-10. MSU carried a 35-13 lead into the half and continued their blitz of Bethel in the second half when they jumped to a 51-20 lead at the 14:10 mark.
Isaiah Canaan led four Racers in double-figures with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the three-point line. Latreze Mushatt added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Jewuan Long scored 11 and Ivan Aska 10. Ed Daniel grabbed eight rebounds.
MSU won the battle of the boards 45-27 and forced Bethel into 27 turnovers.
The game was the first for new Murray State head coach Steve Prohm.
“I was very excited to get this night started and play,” Prohm said. “I thought our energy was good. It's hard to sustain effort sometimes in a game like that over 40 minutes. In the locker room we said you need to win the second half by 20 points. There are many things to critique on the film, but any time you hold someone to 32 points and 25 percent defensive field goal percentage, that's a good night.”
The Racers are back at the CFSB Center Friday to play the 2011-12 season opener. MSU hosts Harris-Stowe in a 7:30 p.m. tip, after the MSU women's team hosts Evansville at 5:15 p.m.
