Donte Poole scored a career-high 18 points as the Murray State Racers opened the 2011-12 season with a 76-49 victory over Harris-Stowe Friday night at the CFSB Center.
The win marked the 22nd straight win in a home opener for the Racers.
The Racers led by 13 when Stacy Wilson hit a three-pointer for a 33-20 lead only 2:12 before half, and MSU led 33-26 at the break.
In the second half, the Racers pulled away starting at the 17:42 mark on a pair of baskets by Poole who keyed the Run with two of his game-high four steals. The Racers led 49-31 and eventually stretched their lead to 66-42 at the 4:53 mark.
Poole was one of four Racers to score in double digits, as Ivan Aska added 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Wilson chipped in 11 points off of the bench and Isaiah Cannan scored 10.
MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm said his team battled all game for the win.
“These games are tough,” Prohm said. “Everybody thinks because you're playing an NAIA, division two team or whatever, that you're just going to come in and be up 20 or 30 points. It doesn't work that way. Harris-Stowe is very well coached team. They spread the floor and gave us problems. I was worried and concerned, we prepared the same way we do for any team.”
Aska led the Racers with nine boards as MSU out-rebounded Harris-Stowe 43-27.
The Racers bottled up the Hornets offense in the second half, holding the visitors to 27 percent from the field on 6-of-22 shots. MSU enjoyed a 53 percent second half making 18-of-34 attempts.
Murray State hits the road for the first time this season early next week, traveling to Baltimore, Md., to take on Morgan State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14.
Game Notes
The Racers are now 61-3 in home openers since the modern era began when the Ohio Valley Conference was formed in 1948. MSU has won 22 straight since their last loss, a triple overtime game at old Racer Arena against Southern Illinois. The Racers have never lost a home opener at the CFSB Center in 14 tries since the building opened with a win over SIU in 1998.
Steve Prohm became the 10th head coach in 15 that have won their first game as the Racers' head coach.
Isaiah Canaan, who is 11th on the all-time MSU made three-point list, hit two more tonight and has a total of 114. He's chasing 10th place William Moore (1994-95) who made 123.
Ivan Aska's 16 points gives him 949 for his MSU career. He's trying to become the 37th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club.
