The Murray State Racers get their 87th season of college basketball going Friday when they host the Harris-Stowe Hornets (Nov. 11) at the CFSB Center in a 7:30 p.m. tip. The game finds the Racers in search of their 22nd consecutive win in a home opener. The Racers enter the game with a 60-3 mark in home openers since 1948.
When it comes to home openers, the Racers have done it well for many years since their last loss, a triple overtime game at old Racer Arena to Southern Illinois in 1989. Since the CFSB Center opened 13 years ago, MSU has never lost a home opener. As for season openers, the Racers won last season starting at home against East Tennessee, but lost in 2009 at California.
Since his hire (May 23) as Racers head coach, Steve Prohm has been working toward this season opener, the first for the 15th head coach in the history of the Murray State program. The previous 14 MSU coaches are 9-5 in opening games. All but two had their opener at home. Fred Overton took the Racers on the road to play Kansas in 1975 and Billy Kennedy took MSU to California in 2006 against San Diego State on a neutral floor.
Prohm is part of a group of 52 new head coaches this season in NCAA D-I, and part of 24 coaches who are head coaches for the first time.
As the Racers begin their 87th season, their overall record is 625 games over .500 and in Ohio Valley Conference play, the Racers are +273.
The Racers enter the 2011-12 season with eyes on winning their third straight OVC regular season championship. MSU's 22 titles and 14 tournament titles, including 14 NCAA appearances, are tops in the league. Since 1990, MSU's 11 league titles are tied for second in the nation with Duke and Gonzaga and trails only Kentucky with 12.
When it comes to consistent performance, the Racers rank among the best in the game. Murray State's current streak of 24 consecutive winning seasons is tied with Connecticut for the fourth longest current streak and trails only Syracuse (41), Kansas (28) and Arizona (27).
