The Murray State women's basketball team will finish up its first home-and-home series of the 2011-12 season when Saint Louis comes to the CFSB Center, Saturday, Dec. 3 for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Racers and the Billikens faced each other in St. Louis, Mo., just a week ago (Nov. 26), with SLU earning a 59-49 win.
Scouting Saint Louis
The Billikens are 2-4 after their last game, a 59-49 win over the Racers. SLU has been idle since the Nov. 26 game in Chaifez Arena.
SLU's scoring leaders are Courtney Webb and Jacy Bradley. Webb is averaging 11.7 points per game and is shooting a team-best .356 (26-of-73) from the field and .273 (6-of-22) from beyond the arc. Bradley adds 9.5 points per game and between the two players they account for all but 11 of the teams triples attempted and two made this season. Lorreal Jones is the leading rebounder for the Billikens, with 10.3 boards per outing.
As a team, SLU is being outscored by 3.2 points per game, but has an advantage of 8.7 rebounds per outing. The Billikens are shooting at a .319 mark and allowing their opponents to hit at a .365 pace.
Against the Billikens
Just a week ago the Racers and SLU meet at Chaifez Arena, with the Billikens earning a 59-49 win. MSU was led by junior Mariah Robinson who tallied 16 points and added four rebounds. Red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess garnered 14 points, in the second half, including seven in the final three minutes. Junior Kyra Watson led the Racers defensively with eight rebounds.
SLU was led by Jacy Bradley with 11 points and eight rebounds. Janisha Gearlds added 10 points, while Lorreal Jones was the top rebounder with 13.
Low shooting percentages were the key to the loss for the Racers, as the team hit just 22.1 (17-of-77) percent of their shots from the field and 15.2 (5-of-33) from beyond the arc. SLU finished the game with a 34.8 (23-of-66) percentage from the floor and 14.3 (1-of-7) percent from beyond the arc. MSU was also out-rebounded 61 to 49.
The Series
The all-time series is currently at 6-4 in favor of the Billikens after SLU has been the victors in the last six outings. The Racers are 2-1 when playing in Murray, Ky.
Making Move Up or On Top-10 Lists
Three members of the team are currently on or close to making their mark on three top-10 lists at MSU. Junior Mariah Robinson is currently ranked No. 8 on the three's made chart, with 111. She is just one away from No.7 (112-Brittany Parker) and 13 from No. 6 (124-Ashley N. Hayes). Senior Kayla Lowe is making a move to join Robinson on the list, with her 88 career triples. The No. 10 spot is 94 (Melissa Shelton).
Fellow senior Mallory Schwab is also making an effort to get on a top-10 list, blocks. The Martinsville, Ind., native has 41 blocks to her name and the chart start at 46 (four players).
1,000 Point Club Membership
Junior Mariah Robinson is cruising along to a membership in the 1,000 Point Club at Murray State. The Beaver Dam, Ky., native is looking to become the 18th member of the club and would be the ninth Racer to do so during her junior campaign. Robinson currently has 753 points, just 247 away from the milestone and is averaging 12.7 points per game this season.
First Double-Double of the Year
Senior Kayla Lowe recorded the team's first double-double of the season at Alabama A&M, with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The last double-double for MSU was tallied by Jessica Winfrey (March 2, 2011) against Austin Peay.
Robinson Reemerging
Junior Mariah Robinson broke a 32 game scoring streak against Mid-Continent and then failed to record a point at Ball State. When she got back on the scoreboard at Alabama A&M she made up for lost time, recording a season-best 25 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 mark from the charity stripe. Since getting the scoring touch back, the Beaver Dam, Ky., native has averaged 21 points per game, including two 20+ performances and has made her last 12 free throws.
Three Point Season
The Racers have made 62 triples this season, 26.7 percent of the school record for the most three's in a season (232). MSU has a season-high of 15 made in a single game (vs. Mid-Con) and has recorded the same or more triples than its opponents in every game this season. Of the 14 active players on the team, only three have not attempted a shot from beyond the arc and 8-of-11 have made at least one.
Going for No. 500/50
The Racers are currently 491-631-2 in their 47th season of basketball. With nine more wins the team will record its 500 victory. The 500th win for MSU would make the Racers the sixth team in the conference to record over 500 wins. MSU would join Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Southeast Missouri, SIU Edwardsville and Tennessee Tech in the club. With three more wins head coach Rob Cross will also reach his 50th career win.
High Pressure Defense
The new high-pressure defense that the Racers are playing this season has forced three of their opponents into 30+ turnovers and two more into 20+ turnovers. This is the first time since at least 1996-97, when individual game stats are available, that the team has forced more than one opponent into 30+ turnovers. The most forced during that span was 39 (Nov. 18, 2009) by Mid-Continent. So far this season MSU has forced Mid-Con into 33, Ball State into 32 and Evansville into 31. Overall the Racers have forced 174 turnovers and have committed just 115.
Jessica's Missing for the Season
Both of the Racers players named Jessica, Jessica Winfrey and Jessica Holder, will miss the 2011-12 campaign due to injury. Winfrey was a key starter for the Racers last year, while Holder was sidelined for most of the 2010-11 campaign due to injury as well.
Up Next
MSU will now start a six-game road trip that will last through Jan. 7. The Racers will make their first stop of the trip in Evansville, Ind., to wrap up the second home-and-home series of the season against the Purple Aces (Dec. 10). The trip will also include the Magnolia Classic at Ole Miss, with games against Mississippi and Cleveland State. The last three games will be the first three games of the Ohio Valley Conference season at Southeast Missouri (Dec. 31), Eastern Illinois (Jan. 2) and Austin Peay (Jan. 7).
