Duo allows one earned run in victory in home opener
BOX SCORE
The pitching combination of Luke Shuemaker and Cameron Finch combined to allow just one earned run as Murray State picked up its first victory of the season, 6-3, over Bowling Green in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
In his second start of the season, Shuemaker (1-1) allowed two unearned runs on eight hits and five strikeouts over six innings. Finch entered the game in the seventh and allowed one run on two hits over three innings to earn the first save of his career.
The Breds (1-4) got on the board in the first inning as Zach Noonan drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a bunt single from Brandon Elliott. Travis Isaak advanced both runners with a groundout to the right side and Jacob Rhodes plated the first run with a groundout to the pitcher. The second run of the inning scored when Colton Moore's grounder to second was misplayed, allowing Elliott to score.
A pair of walks from Ty Stetson and Paul Ritzheimer to start the second inning came back to haunt the Falcons. After the next two hitters were retired, Elliott plated two runners with a double to left center just over the outstretched glove of the left fielder.
The Falcons (0-4) got on the board in the third after Patrick Martin reached on a fielding error and went to third on Ryan Schlater's double to left field. Jon Berti drove in the runner from third with a groundout to second. Clay Duncan followed by plating a run with a single through the left side.
BGSU added a run in the seventh as a hit batter and a walk put two on with one out. Andrew Kuns drove in a runner with a single through the left side.
The Falcons threatened to tie the game in the eighth as Patrick Martin tripled to right center, but was erased at home on a grounder to third by the next hitter. Another groundout and a strikeout ended the threat and the inning.
The Breds responded in the home-half of the inning with two runs as Jacob Rhodes doubled to right center and went to third on a groundout. Stetson drew a two-out walk and both runners scored when Ritzheimer delivered a two-run double to left center.
Cody Apthorpe (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits and four walks over four innings.
Elliott led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Ritzheimer added two RBIs, while Stetson scored a pair of runs.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
