Men’s Tennis Falls in Opening Match of Season

The Murray State men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 13 Louisville in Louisville, Ky.

“I am very happy with the performance level and confidence that the team played with today,” said head Coach Mel Purcell. “Jose Berardo and Mason Johnson played a very strong match and earned a win in doubles which will help build even more confidence. We couldn't have asked for a better tune-up for the rest of the matches this weekend.”

Junior Jose Berardo and senior Mason Johnson earned the lone win for the Racers (0-1) for the day, with an 8-4 win in the No. 3 doubles position vs. Sumit Gupta and Adam Donaldson. However, the win was not enough to earn the doubles point for MSU.

Berardo was also the top performer for the Racers in the singles competition, falling to Gupta 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. Junior Jorge Caetano fell to No. 8 Austen Childs (6-2, 6-0), a player that reached the NCAA Singles Championship match before losing to Stanford's Bradley Klahn.

MSU will now return home for two matches in the next two days at Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Ky. The Racers will first host NCAA Division II standout, Southern Indiana, Friday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. MSU then hosts Memphis, Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m.
