Elliott goes 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored

Murray State allowed four runs in the top of the third inning and were never able to recover as they dropped a 9-2 decision to IPFW in the first game of a four-game series Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Mastadons (2-3) got on the board in the first inning after Garrett Seagraves was hit by a pitch and went to second on Will Faulkner's single through the right side. After a passed ball advanced both runners, A.J. Christensen drove in the runner from third with a slow tapper to first.
The Breds (5-7) tied the game in the home-half of the inning with a Brandon Elliot one-out single through the left side and a balk. Travis Isaak drove in the runner with a single up the middle.
IPFW put together a big third inning as they collected five hits and pushed across four runs. Christensen plated two runs with a single up the middle and Cody Galbraith plated two more runs with a double to right field.
MSU got one run back in the sixth as Elliott doubled down the left-field line and scored on Isaak's double into the gap in left center.
The Mastadons pushed across two more runs in the seventh as they got a run producing groundout from Kurt Dudley and an RBI single to center from Christensen.
IPFW pushed across two more runs in the eighth as a Breds fielding error let two unearned runs to score with two outs.
Luke Shuemaker (2-2) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits over six innings. Nick Opitz (1-1) picked up the victory after allowing two runs on six hits over six innings.
Elliott led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Isaak finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
The two teams return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
