Women’s Tennis Finishes Regular Season with Victory over Morehead State

The win also gave the Racers a 5-3 record (10-12 overall) for the2011 Ohio Valley Conference season. The record ranked MSU in a three-way tie for third place in the league standings. The Racers will now have to wait until the conference determines the championship seeds to see who they will play first in the championship, April 15-17 in Paducah, Ky., at the Larry Heflin Tennis Center.
“We are playing our style of tennis right now,” said head coach Connie Keasling. “The team is where they need to be heading into the tournament. The way they are starting to build their games and points is spectacular.”
During the time that the teams had to play on the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts, the Racers took a 2-1 advantage. MSU earned the doubles point, with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Senior Lindsey Wiseman and freshman Taylor Vick teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles after Morehead State had taken the No. 1 doubles match (8-4). Senior Alexis Webb and freshman Carla Suga then battled through to a tie-breaker at No. 2 doubles to earn a 9-8 (7-4) win.
The Eagles were able to tie the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 4 singles, but Webb earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles to give the Racers a 2-1 lead, as the last of the singles matches to finish before the match was postponed.
In Nashville, Tenn., sophomore Ashley Canty got MSU going again with a 7-6 (2), 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Junior Cassidy Cunitz then solidified the win for the Racers with a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. Wiseman and Suga gave MSU the final two points of the match. Wiseman earned a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, while Suga won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
