BOX SCORE
Evansville scored seven runs in the first two innings and that was more than enough as Murray State could not overcome the deficit in dropping a 8-3 decision to the Purple Aces Tuesday evening at Braun Stadium. The loss marked the 13th-straight to UE dating back to 2005.
The Purple Aces (20-14) got on the board in the first inning as Greg Wallace doubled off the fence in right center and scored on Cody Fick's home run to left center.
A throwing error in the second helped UE score one run, before Wallace followed it up with a three-run homer to left center.
The Breds (13-22) got on the board in the third inning as Cody Larson started the frame with a home run to left field, his second of the season.
MSU added a pair of runs in the sixth after Elliot Frey singled up the middle and Travis Isaak drew a walk. Jacob Rhodes plated both runners as he doubled to the wall in straight-away center field.
The Purple Aces added an unearned run in seventh as a failed pickoff attempt helped put a runner at third for Nate Smith to deliver a sacrifice fly to right center.
Tyler Saltsman (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits in one-plus innings. Ryan Billo (3-0) picked up the victory after allowing three runs on six hits and three strikeouts over six innings.
The Breds bullpen did their job on staff day as four relievers combined to allow just one unearned run on four hits and seven strikeouts over seven innings. Will Handlin got things started and allowed three hits and a strikeout over his two innings. Bryan Babin followed
and retired all six hitters he faced. He retired the first two batters via the strikeout and allowed only one ball to leave the infield.
Curran McNeely followed and allowed an unearned run on one hit and three strikeouts over his two innings. Luke Shuemaker threw a perfect eighth inning as he struckout the first batter looking, and then got back-to-back groundouts.
Rhodes based the Breds offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Wes Warren also went 2-for-3 with a triple.
The Breds return to Ohio Valley Conference action Friday afternoon as they open a three-game series at Eastern Illinois. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
