Racers Fall in Day One of Marriott Volley Brawl

Murray State at Valparaiso
The Racers fell to host Valparaiso in the first match of the day, 3-0 (15-25, 15-25, 8-25) at the Athletics-Recreation Center in Valparaiso, Ind., at the Marriott Volley Brawl.
The teams battled through five tie scores in the first five points before a 4-0 run by the Crusaders (4-1) gave them the lead for good. Valpo added to its advantage with a 3-0 run a few points later to lead 13-7. The Racers made a push and went on a 5-1 run that cut the deficit to two (15-13), but a 5-0 run by the Crusaders pushed them ahead again on their way to the 25-15 win.
The second set started out like the first with the first four serves being traded before Valpo went on a 6-1 run that gave them the lead for good. The Crusaders kept adding to their lead until they led by as many as 10 and earned a 25-15 win.
Valpo took an early 5-1 lead in the final set and never allowed the Racers to get any closer on its way to a 25-8 win.
Murray State vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi
The Racers dropped a 3-0 decision to the Islanders (4-1) in the second match of the day.
Senior Teresa Krog led the team with 12 kills, while senior Mary Cunningham added seven. Junior Lydia Orf lead defensively, with a career-best 24 digs. Junior Molly Goodrich saw her first action of the season in the match as the team's setter and tallied her first career double-double, with 30 assists and 11 digs. Goodrich also hit .571 (4k-0e-7ta).
The first set was a tug-of-war at the beginning, with the teams battling through ties in the first six points. The Islanders were the first to go on a run to extend a lead to two points. TAMCC extended its lead to seven (18-11) before the Racers started to push back, going on 3-0 and 4-0 runs to cut the deficit to two (23-21). However, it was not enough and the Islanders took set one 25-22.
TAMCC took an early 7-1 lead in the second set and never allowed MSU to get closer than four points the rest of the set on its way to a 25-18 win.
The teams battled through 19 tie scores, including trading 2-0 runs during the set, but it was a final 2-0 run that gave the Islanders a 25-23 win.
The Racers earned an advantage in the digs column (62-56), but trailed in hitting percentage (.159/.230) and blocks (1/7).
Murray State will be in action again tomorrow at the Athletics-Recreation Center when they face Evansville (9 a.m.) and Ball State (2 p.m.).
Notes: Senior Mary Cunningham saw her first action of the season against Valpo and her first start of the year…freshman Morgen Clayton and Beth Mahurin also saw their first action of the year…junior Molly Goodrich earned her first career start against Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
