The Murray State women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 76-72 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Tennessee Tech at the CFSB Center.
The Racers were led by junior Mariah Robinson, who tallied 24 points and eight rebounds. Red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess added 18 points and six rebounds, while junior Kyra Watson had a career night with 13 points and six rebounds.
The first half was a close battle for most of the way. The Racers were the first team to go on a run to take a lead, after a 6-0 run that ended with MSU leading 14-11. The Golden Eagles kept the game close and cut the deficit to one point several times over the next 10 minutes and eventually took a one-point lead (28-27), with 6:45 left. Robinson then hit a three to give the Racers the lead again for good in the stanza. The triple started a 13-2 run over the final six minutes of the half, which gave MSU a 40-30 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Racers started the second half by maintaining around a 10-point advantage. With just under 12 minutes left the Golden Eagles started a come-back and cut the deficit to one (52-51) with a 10-1 run. However, MSU responded with a 13-2 run, over a four-minute span, to built the lead back to 12 (65-53). In the final four minutes of the game TTU made one final push and used nine free throws to go on a 15-8 run, but it wasn't enough to overcome the advantage that the Racers had built.
Free throws ended up being the deciding factor in the game, as MSU trailed TTU in rebounding (52-39) and shooting percentage (38.8 to 33.3). The Racers made 24-of-29 attempts from the charity stripe to the Golden Eagles 19-of-27 mark. Three-point shots were also a key advantage for MSU, who made 8-of-27 triples and held TTU to just a 1-of-15 clip.
The Racers will wrap-up their three-game home stand, Monday, Jan. 16 when they host Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. in the CFSB Center.
Notes: Junior Mariah Robinson tied her season high for three-pointers made in the first half, with five…MSU is now 4-1 when playing at home this season…senior Kayla Lowe went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, a career high.
