The Murray State Racers try to build on their 18-0 start to the 2011-12 season when they meet the Morehead State Eagles in a key road test in the Ohio Valley Conference. The game tips at 6 p.m. central time at Johnson Arena in Morehead, Ky., and is aired by the Racer TV Network. The Racers are coming off an 82-74 win Saturday at home with Tennessee Tech as they kept solo first place in the league at 6-0.
The games on the Racer TV Network are available to all 100,000-plus NewWave, Mediacom, Murray Electric and Comcast subscribers at no additional charge. ESPN3.com will also stream the game.
NewWave customers will see the broadcasts on channel 16, in all areas west of Kentucky Lake and in Hopkinsville and Madisonville. Mediacom is seen in Marshall, Calloway, Trigg and Caldwell Counties as well as southern Illinois on channel 23. Murray Electric services the city of Murray and carries the games on channels 15 and 18, while Comcast subscribers will see the Racers on channel 17 in McCracken County and southern Illinois.
MSU's Donte Poole is the OVC Player of the Week after he averaged 24.5 points in two wins last week. It marks back-to-back weeks for MSU to have the weekly award after Isaiah Canaan won the it (Jan. 9) for his third this season. Zay Jackson is the OVC's Freshman of the Week marking his first weekly award since coming to MSU.
Morehead State is 3-3 in the OVC with a win Saturday over Eastern Kentucky at home 57-54. The Eagles defeated Austin Peay (Dec. 31) 68-64 and are 2-0 at home in league play this season.
The Racers are into their sixth consecutive week of being ranked in the Associated Press Poll. However, MSU has been ranked higher in the ESPN/USA Today poll for the last three weeks at no. 10, while they're no. 12 in the AP poll.
Either way, the rankings are an all-time high for MSU topping the no. 16 spot they had twice in the early 1950's. MSU is also the no. 1 team in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll for the first in program history, the first for an OVC team.
Starting the week, MSU was one of remaining three unbeaten teams, but that group is now a pair after Baylor (Big-12) lost Monday at Kansas. The Racers and Syracuse (Big East) are the only undefeated teams in all of NCAA D-I Basketball
The Racers' 18-0 start surpasses the 16-0 start by the 1935-36 team as the best in the program's 87 seasons. MSU's 18 straight wins has passed the 17 straight the 2009-10 team won as the school's all-time win streak.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches and 24 first-time head coaches in NCAA D-I.
Prohm's Racers were recently named on The Sporting News list of the Most Fun Teams To Watch.
